The Irish National final was held on 16 February 1969 and was broadcast on RTÉ while being held in Dublin, Ireland and hosted by Brendan O'Reilly. The song was decided by 10 regional juries throughout Ireland.

Four of the contestants had previously represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest. Butch Moore represented Ireland in 1965 where he sang "Walking in the Streets in the Rain" and finished 6th in the Eurovision Final. Dickie Rock represented Ireland in 1966 where he sang "Come Back to Stay" and finished 4th in the Eurovision Final. Sean Dunphy represented Ireland in 1967 and sang "If I Could Choose" and placed 2nd in the Eurovision Final. Pat McGeegan represented Ireland in 1968 and sang "Chance of a Lifetime" placed 4th in 1968.
