Jōetsumyōkō Station (上越妙高駅, Jōetsumyōkō-eki) is an interchange railway station under construction in Jōetsu, Niigata, Japan, to be operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and the third-sector railway operator Echigo Tokimeki Railway. It is scheduled to open in March 2015.[1]

Lines

Jōetsumyōkō Station will be served by the Echigo Tokimeki Railway Myōkō Haneuma Line and the high-speed Hokuriku Shinkansen, which is also scheduled to open for service on 14 March 2015.[2] It will replace Wakinoda Station on the Shinetsu Main Line, located approximately 120 m away.[1] Journey times from Tokyo via the Hokuriku Shinkansen are expected to be 1 hour 48 minutes.[3] Only Hakutaka semi-fast Tokyo-to-Kanazawa services will stop at Jōetsumyōkō on the Hokuriku Shinkansen.[4]

Station layout

The new station will consist of two elevated island platforms serving four tracks on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, with a ground-level island platform serving two tracks for the Myōkō Haneuma Line.[2][5]

History

Jōetsumyōkō Station under construction behind Wakinoda Station, March 2013

Initially provisionally named Jōetsu Station (上越駅), the name Jōetsumyōkō Station was formally announced in June 2013.[6] Construction is scheduled to be completed in October 2014.[1] It will open in March 2015, coinciding with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension from Nagano.[1] It will replace Wakinoda Station on the Shinetsu Main Line, located approximately 120 m away.[1]
