Appearances[edit]
Leifang has appeared in all Dead or Alive games since the first one. She is a college student from China and has been 19 years old in early games[9] prior to the two-year time skip in Dead or Alive 5. Several years earlier, she was saved from a group of street fighters by a martial artist Jann Lee before she could have handled the situation herself.[10] Since that incident, she obsessively seeks to prove herself to Jann Lee by defeating him.[11] As a result, she has entered every DOA tournament but has lost to Jann Lee repeatedly, only managing to defeat him in the fourth one.
As a girl who grew up in a wealthy family, Leifang is a woman of justice and bears a very independent spirit, but is also spunky, intelligent and cheerful. Practicing martial arts has given her a strong dedication to self-improvement, both mentally and physically. Leifang hopes that by honing her own skills, she can eventually help others to do the same. She has become angry at Jann Lee for helping in a time of need, rather than thanking him for his assistance: her young age and general inexperience with the world around her can sometimes cause her to act very impulsively.[note 1] Leifang has a close friends in the karate master Hitomi. In Dead or Alive 2, she forms a philosophical rivalry with the wrestler Tina Armstrong, who believes that the meaning of power comes from physical strength, and the two become friends while remaining rivals by the time of Dead or Alive 5.
Leifang was portrayed by the stuntswoman Ying Wang in a minor role in the live-action film DOA: Dead or Alive. She makes several appearances at the beginning of the film, until she got knocked out by Gen Fu, and can be seen far away in the beach scene.
Design and gameplay[edit]
Leifang was noted as resembling the heroines of the kung fu film genre.[12] She is known for her signature queu hairstyle,[13] but has also sported a variety of other hairstyles through the series, of which she has the most of all characters. Her Japanese voice actress is Yumi Tōma, who also voiced a similar character of Tekken's Ling Xiaoyu.
Saturn Power judged Leifang as one of the original game's better characters due to her "great counters and lightning speed".[14] According to IGN's Hillary Goldstein, Leifang "has some of the best counters in DOA Ultimate, which helps since she isn't exactly a master of combos."[15] Leifang is an extremely defensive character in Dead or Alive Xtreme beach volleyball spin-off games;[16] Official Xbox Magazine opined "Leifang's real strength is in her ball control, but not in her power. She won't be able to blow past blocks, but she's great at digs and sets."[17] Leifang was vastly improved for Dead or Alive 5, including being given a uniquely advanced ability to parry the opponents' attacks.[18] According to Anthony Chau of IGN.com, "Her elegant moves hide powerful attacks and while she's not the greatest in combination department, she's never been a combo-intensive character like Zack or Kasumi. Lei Fang's strength lies in two main areas: high priority moves and proficiency in countering."[19]
Merchandise and promotion[edit]
Several figures of the character were released by Bandai, Epoch, and other companies,[20] such as After Dark and Kotobukiya.[21][22] Other merchandise include dakimakura body pillow cases.[23] A special campaign running from August 25 to September 14 of 2015 has offered Leifang as a playable character in Dead or Alive 5 Last Round free of charge.[24] Her wardrobe in Last Round includes the downloadable costumes of Telma from Koei Tecmo's Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess,[25] Estelle Bright from Nihon Falcom's The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel,[26] and Hotaru Sakamiya from Square Enix's School Girl Strikers.[27]
Reception[edit]
One of the original DOA girls, Lei Fang is the face of the Dead or Alive series, with the most recognizable braided pigtails in all of video gaming. We love Lei Fang because she dresses with some elegance, but also because counters are easily the most visually impressive attacks in DOAU and Lei Fang can deliver them time and time again.
The character has been well received by gaming media. Upon her introduction, Computer and Video Games compared her to Pai Chan from Virtua Fighter as looking "a lot" like her and Sega Saturn Magazine called her a "clone" of Pai, but also described Kasumi and Tina being "in a class of their own" and as superior "even" to Lara Croft.[12][28] On the other hand, Saturn Power opined that while most of "the DOA competitors seem either insipid or a mite too similar to Virtua Fighter stalwarts for comfort (...) Lei-Fang and Jann Lee are okay".[14] Previewing Dead or Alive 2, Dreamcast Magazine described Leifang as "a Chinese beauty in all senses of the word... as well as proving to be a bit of a femme fatale at the same time" and noted her "an elegant fighter if ever there was one."[29] Actress Kim Oja said she especially liked Leifang's outfit, "the long dress with side slit up to Timbuktu."[30] Leifang was voted the DOA series' ninth most popular female character in Japan in the publisher Koei Tecmo's own polls in 2014[31] and 2015.[32]
GameDaily featured the "beautiful yet deadly" Leifang as their Babe of the Week on multiple occasions, including in a gallery article dedicated to her alone and as one of the "bikini babes".[33][34] Together with Leifang as well as Kasumi and Ayane, Hitomi placed tenth on the 2011 list "video game hotties" by the Spanish edition of IGN.[35] Maxim included her among the top nine "video game vixens" in 2009[36] and Steve Jenkins of CheatCodes.com ranked her as the 16th hottest "video game girl" of all time in 2013.[37] She was also put on the lists of the "greatest boobs in gaming history" by GameFront, at number 13,[38] and the most humiliating video game quotes, for her "No matter how much you try, you still won't beat me" line in Dead or Alive: Dimensions.[39] In 2015, Indonesian television Liputan 6 placed Leifang fifth on their list of sexiest Oriental women in video games,[40] while Vietnamese daily Thanh Niên ranked her as the 16th most sexy female video game character in general.[41] Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft called her "everyone's favorite supreme ultimate fist college student."[42] In "Xbox High Yearbook 2003", Official Xbox Magazine chose Leifang and Hitomi as a couple "most likely to have a 'college experience'."[43]

Notes[edit]
- ^ This is particularly evident in Dead or Alive 4, where she fights with her friend Hitomi over a simple cabbage or when kicks an old man out of the train after he accidentally grabbed her breasts (in her story mode outro).
