Marshall railway station is located on the Warrnambool line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the southern Geelong suburb of Marshall, and it opened on 26 April 2005.[2]
The original station was called Connewarre when it opened on 14 July 1879, and was renamed Marshall on 1 April 1907.[2] The station was closed to passengers on 14 October 1957,[2] with the platform removed by 22 July 1958.[2][3] It was closed to all traffic on 17 February 1964.[2]
During the 2002 Victorian State Election, the State Government proposed a new station to serve the rapidly expanding southernmost suburbs of Geelong.[4] During the planning stages, the station was named Grovedale. In December 2003, it was announced that the new station would be built adjacent to the Marshalltown Road level crossing,[5] on the site of the former Marshall station. Following a naming competition, it was revealed in September 2004 that the new station would be called Marshall.[6]
The new station opened to passenger traffic on 26 April 2005,[2] and was initially served only by Warrnambool line services. From September 2005, it began to be served by Geelong line services, extended from South Geelong, and became the terminus for most Geelong line services.[3][7] Following its opening in October 2014, Waurn Ponds station became the terminus for the majority of Geelong line services.[8]
As part of the Regional Rail Revival project, the station is to be rebuilt, and will include a new second platform, a new pedestrian overpass, a new station building to replace the existing structure, an upgraded waiting room and forecourt, new car parking spaces, upgraded bus interchange and upgrades to lighting and CCTV.[9] As part of these works, the railway line between Waurn Ponds and South Geelong is also to be duplicated.[10]
Disused station Geelong Racecourse was located between Marshall and South Geelong.[11]
