Megan Denise Fox (born May 16, 1986) is an American actress and model.

After a successful career as a model, Fox launched her acting career in 2001 with a supporting role as Brianna Wallace in Holiday in the Sun, starring opposite Mary Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen. Fox then guest-starred in various television series, including What I Like About You, Two and a Half Men, The Help, and Ocean Ave. She also played a recurring role as Sydney Shanowski on Hope and Faith.

In 2004, Fox began her film career starring opposite Lindsay Lohan in Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen. Her other films include Crimes Of Fashion (2004, TV), How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (2008) and Whore (2008). Fox's breakout role was as Mikaela Banes, Shia LaBeouf's character's love interest in the 2007 blockbuster film Transformers, a role for which Fox was nominated and won various Teen Choice Awards.[1] She appeared in the sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Her upcoming films include Jennifer's Body,[2] Jonah Hex, and The Crossing.[3][4][5]

Early life

Fox was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee,[6] to Darlene Tonachio, former Roane County, Tennessee Tourism Director,[6][7] and Franklin Foxx.[8] Fox's father dropped an "x" from his surname. Fox has one older sister.[9] Fox's parents divorced when she was young and she and her sister were raised by her mother and her stepfather.[10][11][10] Fox said of her mother and her stepfather that they "were really strict" and Fox said of her childhood that "I was grounded for all of my childhood. Not most — all” and Fox said that “I wasn’t doing anything particularly crazy,” and that “I just never appreciated authority figures preaching to me.”[10] Fox is of Irish, French and Native American ancestry.[12] Fox grew up in nearby Rockwood, Tennessee and she began her training in drama and dance at age five, in Kingston, Tennessee.[8] She attended a dance class at the community center there and was involved in Kingston Elementary School's chorus and the Kingston Clippers swim team. At 10-years-old, after moving to St. Petersburg, Florida, Fox continued her training. She attended Morningside Academy, a private Christian school, in Port St. Lucie, during her middle school years and finished her high school education at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, in Port St. Lucie, though when Fox was 17 she tested out of school via correspondence from St. Lucie West Centennial High School.[6][13][14]

Fox said that in middle school, she was bullied and picked on and that she ate lunch in the bathroom to avoid being "pelted with ketchup packets". Fox said that the problem was not her looks, but that “[she had] always gotten along better with boys,” and that “rubbed some people the wrong way.”[15] Fox also said of high school that "but I was not, ever for a second, popular — I mean, never" and that "everyone hated me, and I was a total outcast, my friends were always guys, I have a very aggressive personality, and girls didn’t like me for that. I’ve had only one great girlfriend my whole life."[16] Fox also said of school that "I just hated school, period. I wasn’t interested and I wasn’t getting anything from it. I’ve never been a big believer in formal education and I always knew what I wanted to do, which was be an actress — the education I was getting seemed irrelevant. So, I was sort of checked out on that part of it."[16] Fox said of her living condition as a teenager that "My mom lived with me until I started making enough money to support myself,” and that “I was asking her to leave the entire time. I’d been ready to move out since I was, like, 14.”[10]

Career

2001-2006: Early work

At 16, Fox made her acting debut in the 2001 film Holiday in the Sun, as the spoiled heiress Brianna Wallace and rival of Alex Stewart (Ashley Olsen). The film was released Direct-to-DVD on November 20, 2001. She made her television debut on the television series Ocean Ave. as Ione Star. The series, however, was quickly canceled after two seasons, from 2002-2003. She also served as an uncredited extra in Bad Boys 2 in 2003.[17] That same year, she guest-starred on What I Like About You, appearing in the episode "Like a Virgin (Kinda)."

In 2004, Fox guest-starred on Two and a Half Men in the episode "Camel Filters and Pheromones".[18] That same year she made her film debut in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen co-starring opposite Lindsay Lohan. In the film Fox plays a supporting role in the film, Carla Santi, a rival of Lola (Lindsay Lohan). She was then cast on the failed television comedy The Help appearing in only three episodes. The show focused on the hard-lucked life of a beauty school dropout, Fox portrayed the part of Cassandra Ridgeway, a spoiled daughter. She also appeared in the television film Crimes Of Fashion as Candace. The movie premiered on July 25, 2004 on ABC Family. After the cancellation of the television series The Help, Fox joined the cast on the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith as a recurring role, in which she portrayed Sydney Shanowski, replacing Nicole Paggi in the role. In 2006 the television show was canceled due to poor ratings. Fox appeared in 36 episodes from seasons 2 to 3.[19]

2007-Present: Career Success

Megan Fox at Hollywood Life Magazine’s 7th Annual Breakthrough Awards.

In 2007, Fox won the lead female role of Mikaela Banes in the 2007 live-action film Transformers, based on the toy and cartoon saga of the same name. Fox played the love interest of Shia LaBeouf's character Sam Witwicky. Fox was nominated for an MTV Movie Award and was also nominated for three Teen Choice Awards. Fox has signed on for two more Transformers sequels.[19][20][21]

In 2008, Fox appeared in How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, starring alongside Jeff Bridges, Simon Pegg and Kirsten Dunst. The film premiered on October 3, 2008, the film was a box-office failure.[22] Also in 2008, Fox appeared in Whore. The film was released October 20, 2008. Fox starred alongside Rumer Willis.[23]

Fox reprised her role as Mikaela Banes in the Transformers sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. There was some controversy surrounding Fox's appearance while filming the sequel of Transformers when Michael Bay, the movie's director, ordered the actress to gain 10 pounds.[24] Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was released worldwide on June 24, 2009.[25]

Fox is set to have her first lead role in a film, playing the title character in Jennifer's Body. The film is set to be released on September 18, 2009. Fox will star alongside Adam Brody in the Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody's second feature film. In April 2009, Fox began filming Jonah Hex. Fox will portray Leila, a gun-wielding beauty and Jonah Hex's (Josh Brolin) love interest. The film is set to be released on August 10, 2010. In addition to Brolin, Fox will star alongside Will Arnett.[26] In early 2009, Fox signed on to star the lead female role in the up-coming 2011 film The Crossing. The plot centers around "a young couple gets caught up in a drug trafficking scheme during their vacation to Mexico."[4][5]

Fox was rumored to have been cast as the replacement for Angelina Jolie in the third Lara Croft: Tomb Raider franchise movie, but Fox herself has denied that she was taking the role.[27]

Comparison to Angelina Jolie

Fox has often been compared to actress, Angelina Jolie by the media dubbing her as an "Angelina clone", "Angelina 2.0" and "Angelina Jr." among others.[45][46][47][46][48][49][50] Fox has been compared to Jolie because they each have a "tattoo collection", and status as a "built in sex-symbol".[51][52][53]

Fox said of the comparisons that "I think it’s a lack of creativity on the media’s part. Because I have tattoos and dark hair and I was in an action movie? That’s as far as the similarities extend. I’m not the next anyone."[51] Fox was also said to have been replacing Jolie in the next Lara Croft film, but Fox turned down the role, saying "There have been a lot of films I've had to pass on because I don't want people thinking I'm trying to emulate her."[54][55][56]

Fox said of the idea of ever meeting Jolie that, "I haven't had the opportunity to meet her and I try to avoid that because I'm afraid," and "She's a powerful person and I bet she would eat me alive."[54][57] Fox also continued with and remarked that, "I'm sure she has no idea who I am. But if I were her, I'd be like, 'Who the fuck is this little bullshit brat who was in Transformers that's going to be the next me?' I don't want to meet her. I'd be embarrassed."[51][58]

Tattoos

Fox in October, 2007 with two of her tattoos visible.

Fox has eight known tattoos,[59] including her fiancé's name "Brian" on her lower hip and a picture of Marilyn Monroe's face on her right forearm.[60] Fox also has another tattoo on her right shoulder that reads, "We will all laugh at gilded butterflies" a line adapted from William Shakespeare's play King Lear, a yin and yang tattoo on her left inner wrist, a poem on the left side of her rib cage that reads "there once was a little girl who never knew love until a boy broke her HEART," and a Chinese word for "strength" on her neck.[61] Fox also has a crescent moon overlapping a five pointed star on the inner aspect of her lower leg above her right ankle. This tattoo is the only known colored tattoo that Fox has.[62]

Fox said she has a Marilyn Monroe tattoo because "She was one of the first people I saw on television, like, literally moments after I was born. Every time I heard her voice growing up I always would cry. I wouldn't know why when I was younger but had my own theories. I've just always empathized with her."[63] Fox also said of that tattoo: "I know a lot about her but I empathized with her before I knew any of those things so that’s why I was driven to actually ink it on my arm. It was between her and Kurt Cobain and I went with her."[59]

Fox also said on her yin/yang tattoo that "The guy was smoking weed while he tattooed me and he didn't do it correctly. Now it's nothing and I'm gonna get it removed. I was told he was a really amazing tattoo artist but he wasn't on his game that night. He was distracted." However, Fox still has that tattoo as of May 2009.[63] Fox has said of her tattoos that "Every time I get a tattoo, it's a little 'fuck you' to anyone who tells me not to."[64]

In late May, 2009 when Fox was at JFK airport she told paparrazzi that she was planning on getting another tattoo, Fox had said that she was planning on getting a sleeve tattoo on her right arm.[65] It was widely reported that Fox and her mother Darlene, had come to a strong disagreement and sparked argument's over Fox's tattoo's in general and Fox's plan to get a sleeve tattoo.[66][67][68] Fox's mother Darlene had said that she has never understood why Fox would want to "cover her gorgeous body with tattoos". The National Enquirer reported that after each new tattoo that Fox got that Darlene "pleaded" with Fox not to get anymore. Fox's mother Darlene had felt that when Fox is a "40-year-old woman wanting to play more mature roles, people won’t hire her because it will be too hard to cover her tattoos.” and Darlene also had feared it would and will jeopardise Fox's career.[69][70]

Personal life

Fox has been involved with actor Brian Austin Green of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles fame since 2004, having first met on the set of Fox's show Hope & Faith.[71][72] It was reported that the couple had ended their relationship in July 2008[73][74] and in February 2009;[75][76] however, Fox and Green both confirmed on both occasions that the two are still in a relationship.[71][77] On June 15, 2009 at the UK premiere of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Fox confirmed that she is single again saying, "I'm what you would call single".[78] On June 30, 2009 Fox was again spotted on a date with Green and the two are reportedly in a relationship again.[79]

Fox is good friends with Jennifer Blanc, Kellan Rhude, Jennifer's Body co-star Amanda Seyfried, Michael Biehn and Fox is also close friends with her Transformers co-star Shia LaBeouf whom Fox calls "one of her favorite people ever."[80] Fox is both a fan of comic books, anime, and video games. Fox has said that her interest in art began when she was 12 years-old when she began watching animated shows on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.[81] Fox's favorite artist is Michael Turner, Fox's favorite comic book by Turner is Fathom, which she describes as "one of her longtime obsessions".[82] Fox has two dogs, including a pomeranian named after the punk-icon Sid Vicious.[80][83]

Fox has openly stated that she's taken drugs saying that, "I've done drugs, and that's how I know I don't like them.", and that she's "tried several things" in order to "make an informed decision" but that she "didn't enjoy anything other than marijuana.". Fox also said that "Cocaine is back with a vengeance ... Celebrities aren't trying to hide it, except when people have camera phones," and commenting that "I know about five people who aren't on drugs today, and I'm one of them."[84][85][86] Fox has also openly stated that she supports the legalization of marijuana, saying "I don't even think of it as a drug -- it should be legalized," and continuing with "When they do, I'll be the first person in line to buy my pack of joints," and "I can't tell you how much bullshit I've been through because I will openly say that I smoke weed. People look at it like it's this crazy, hippy, fucked-up thing to do. And it's not. I hope they legalize it."[87][88][89][90][91]

In an interview with GQ Magazine, Fox claimed that when she was 18 years-old that she fell in love and sought to establish a relationship with a female stripper. Fox used the experience to illustrate her belief that, "all humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes."[92] In May, 2009 Fox stated that she is bisexual, saying "I have no question in my mind about being bisexual."[93]

On June 15, 2009, at the UK premiere of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Fox said that she has a "crush" on Cheryl Cole and that she loves "her tattoos". [94] Fox stated in June, 2009 that she is interested in Korean pop singer Rain.[95][96] Fox said when she was on "The Kyle and Jackie O Show" that "There's this Korean Justin Timberlake named Rain. And I'm really on this situation right now, I'm trying to fix this up."[97] Fox is also Catholic.[98] In an interview with GQ Magazine Fox showed interest in Olivia Wilde saying, "I could see myself in a relationship with a girl - Olivia Wilde is so sexy she makes me want to strangle a mountain ox with my bare hands. She's mesmerizing."[99][100] In June, 2009 Wilde replied during an interview with the same magazine saying, “of course, anything I can do to save the mountain ox, I’m happy to do,”.[101][102]

Controversy

While promoting Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in June 2009, Fox was asked how she would stop Megatron from demolishing the world, Fox replied, "I'd make a deal with him and instead of the entire planet, can you just take out all of the white trash, hillbilly, anti-gay, super bible-beating people in Middle America?"[103][104][105] This response was panned by the conservative NewsBusters, writing that "While Fox may be a star on the big screen, her words certainly don’t make her shine."[106] The Naples Daily News was also highly critical of her comments.[107]
