Mira Murati (born 1988) is an Albanian[1] engineer and business executive. She joined OpenAI in 2018, serving as the CTO of the company, and as of November 2023, took over as the interim chief executive officer of OpenAI, replacing Sam Altman who was ousted by the board due to no longer having confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI. [2]

Early life and education

Murati was born in 1988[3] in Vlorë, Albania, to Albanian parents.[4] At the age of 16, she left Albania to attend Pearson College UWC, the United World College situated on Vancouver Island, Canada, from which she graduated with an International Baccalaureate diploma in 2007.[4]

For her undergraduate education, Murati attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, on a Davis-UWC Scholarship; while there she was selected for the school's five year, dual degree program in engineering with Dartmouth College.[5] In 2012, she graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth and a Bachelor of Arts from Colby.[6][7][8]

Career

Murati started her career as an intern at Goldman Sachs in 2011, and worked at Zodiac Aerospace from 2012 to 2013. She spent three years at Tesla as a senior product manager of Model X before joining Leap Motion.[6][9][10]

She then joined OpenAI in 2018, later becoming its chief technology officer, leading the company's work on ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex[9][11] and overseeing the company's research, product and safety teams.[12]

On November 17, 2023, Murati took over as interim chief executive officer of OpenAI, following the abrupt removal of Sam Altman.[13][14]

She is an advocate for the regulation of AI,[6][15] arguing that governments should play a greater role "in aligning on some basic safety standards for deployment of these models."[16]
