Park Chanyeol (born November 27, 1992)[1] is a South Korean singer, rapper and actor who is a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group EXO and its sub-unit EXO-K.

Early life

Park Chanyeol was born in Seoul, South Korea. He attended Hyundai High School in Apgujeong-dong, Seoul. He has a sister named Park Yoora, who is currently an announcer at South Korean broadcasting station MBC. Chanyeol was admitted to a private acting institution when he was sixteen years old, where he became good friends with Block B's P.O.

After watching School of Rock in elementary school, Chanyeol became interested in music and he soon began playing the drums.[2] Chanyeol, started dreaming of becoming a singer after listening to Unconditional Kismet by Yoo Young-jin.[3] When he was a first year student in middle school, he formed a band called "Heavy Noise" with his best friends and played with them for about three years.[4] During his first years of high school, he was involved in his school's band, "Siren".

Chanyeol became a trainee under SM Entertainment after winning second place in the 2008 Smart Model Contest. While training under S.M., he began to turn his focus towards rapping. Prior to his debut, Chanyeol made cameo appearances in TVXQ's "HaHaHa Song" music video and Girls' Generation's "Genie" music video in 2008 and 2010 respectively.

He is currently a student majoring in Culture and Art Management at Kyung Hee Cyber University alongside some of his fellow EXO members of Suho, Baekhyun, and Kai.[5]

Career

Music

On February 23, 2012, Chanyeol became the last Exo member to be formally introduced to the public. In April 2012, he was featured in Girls' Generation-TTS's music video for their debut single "Twinkle".

In 2014, Chanyeol wrote the rap for the Korean version of the track "Run" from Exo's second EP and was featured in labelmates Henry and Zhou Mi's debut EPs. In 2015, along with fellow Exo members Chen and Lay, he co-wrote the Korean version of the track "Promise" from the the re-release edition Love Me Right of Exo's second studio album.[6] He later wrote the rap for "Lightsaber", Exo's promotional single for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The song also appeared in Exo's third EP.

In 2016, Chanyeol wrote and performed the rap in Yesung's song "Confession" from the latter's debut EP.[7] In Exo's third studio album Ex'Act, which was released in May 2016, he co-wrote the lyrics for the track "Heaven".[8] In June 2016, Chanyeol and Yuan Shanshan released a duet titled "I Hate You" as soundtrack for their movie So I Married an Anti-fan.[9][10]

Chanyeol has cited Jason Mraz and Eminem as his biggest influences, though he was a fan of rock bands like Muse, Green Day, Nirvana, and X-Japan in middle school.[11]

Acting and television

In 2014, he became a cast member of SBS's reality television shows Law of the Jungle in Micronesia[12] and Roommate. He left Roommate in September because of scheduling conflicts.[13]

In April 2015, Chanyeol made his big screen debut in the South Korean movie Salut d'Amour alongside actress Moon Ga-young, who he later co-starred with in the web-drama EXO Next Door.[14] In October 2015, he was announced to be playing the male lead role alongside actresses Yuan Shanshan and labelmate Seohyun in the South Korean-Chinese movie So I Married an Anti-fan, which is set to be released in June 2016.

In April 2016, Chanyeol was announced to be starring alongside actor Kang Ha-neul in the upcoming MBC television drama, Gaia.[15]
