Snake Eyes (also known as Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins) is an upcoming American superhero film[2][3] directed by Robert Schwentke, with a screenplay written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, Joe Shrapnel, and Anna Waterhouse, from a story by Spiliotopoulos. Based on Hasbro's G.I. Joe toy, comic, and media franchise, the film is a reboot of the G.I. Joe film series and serves as an origin story for the title character Snake Eyes. Henry Golding stars as the character, replacing Ray Park who portrayed him in the previous films, while Andrew Koji, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, Haruka Abe, Takehiro Hira, and Iko Uwais also star.

Snake Eyes is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 23, 2021, by Paramount Pictures.

Premise

A lone fighter is welcomed into and trained by an ancient Japanese ninja clan called the Arashikage, but finds his loyalties being tested when secrets from his past are revealed, as he eventually goes on the path to become the hero known as "Snake Eyes".

Cast

Additionally, Steven Allerick has been cast in an undisclosed role.

Production

Development

It was announced in May 2018 that the next installment of the G.I. Joe franchise would be a spin-off film chronicling the origins of the character Snake Eyes.[4] In December, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that Ray Park, who had played the character in the previous films, would not reprise his role for this film.[5] Robert Schwentke was set as director that same month.[6]

Casting

In August 2019, Henry Golding was cast to star in the title role.[7] Andrew Koji was then cast as Storm Shadow, taking over the role from Lee Byung-hun, who played the character in the previous films.[8] In September, Iko Uwais entered negotiations to join the film as Hard Master, and Úrsula Corberó was cast as Baroness.[9][10] Uwais was confirmed in October, with Haruka Abe, Samara Weaving and Takehiro Hira added to the cast.[11][12] Steven Allerick was announced as part of the cast in December.[13] On Golding's Instagram post, it shows that Peter Mensah with the cast as he joined as Blind Master, taking over the role from RZA, who played him in the previous films.[14][15]

Filming

Filming began on October 15, 2019 in Vancouver and was expected to continue until December 9.[16] Filming moved to Japan on January 10, 2020.[17][18] Filming wrapped on February 26, 2020.[19] Golding announced on March 2021 that the film were doing some reshoots.[20]

Release

Snake Eyes is scheduled for release on July 23, 2021 in RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema and IMAX.[21] It was originally scheduled for release on March 27, 2020,[22] before being delayed to October 16,[23] and then a week later to October 23, 2020.[24] The film was then removed from the release schedule on July 27 due to nationwide theater closures in the United States in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.[25] Paramount later rescheduled the film for October 22, 2021, before it was moved up to July 2021.[26][27][28] The film could be available to stream on Paramount+ 45 days after it releases in theatres.[29]

Future

In May 2020 it was reported that a follow-up movie is in development, with a script co-written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, and Golding reprising his role as Snake Eyes. Lorenzo di Bonaventura will return as producer, while the project will be a joint-venture production between Paramount Pictures, Entertainment One, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Di Bonaventura Pictures.[30]
