Song Min-ho, also known by his stage name Mino, is a South Korean rapper and songwriter. He is a member and main rapper of the boy group Winner and has participated in the Korean drama The Strongest K-POP Survival.

Life and career

Early life

Song Min-ho was born in Yongin, South Korea. He graduated from Hanlim Arts High School. He also has a younger sister named Song Dan-ah, who is a member of a group called New F.O.

Career

Song Min-ho started out as an underground rapper under the stage name "Mino" or "Hugeboy Mino" with other underground rappers-turned-idols, namely Block B’s Zico, Kyung, P.O and M.I.B's SIMS. Min-ho was initially a trainee intended for the male group Block B, but left the group before debut for personal reasons.[1] In 2011, he made his debut as a rapper with the ballad group BoM under Y2Y Contents Company, however the group was disbanded two years later due to its lack of popularity with the public.[2] He made his acting debut in March 2012 The Strongest K-POP Survival in Channel A.[3]

In 2013, he was recruited into YG Entertainment through private auditions after being recognized from his acting debut in the March 2012 cable drama The Strongest K-POP Survival in Channel A.[3] He was introduced in the reality-survival program called Who is Next: WIN as part of "Team A." Team A and their adversaries Team B were both formed from trainees within YG Entertainment. The teams competed against each other in order to debut as the first YG boy group in eight years, following on the strong legacy of YG's previously debuted male group Big Bang. At the conclusion of the program the title of Winner was given to Team A after they won all three rounds of public voting.[4] Song and fellow Winner teammate Kang Seung-yoon teamed up with Yoon Jong-shin for his monthly project release single called "Wild Boy".[5]

In October 2014, Mino was featured in Epik High's single "Born Hater" with Beenzino, Verbal Jint, B.I, and Bobby.[6]

In December 2014, it was reported that Mino teamed up with 2PM's Nichkhun, CNBLUE's Yonghwa, Infinite's L and B1A4's Baro for project 'Lucky Boys'(Super 5) for the 2014 SBS Gayo Daejun. He also co-hosted the event with Nichkhun, Yonghwa, L and Baro alongside actress Song Ji Hyo.[7]

In April 2015, it was reported that he will compete on the fourth season of Show Me the Money.[8] During his audition, he stated in one of his verses in the lyrics, that he want to compete fairly without any help from his label.[9] In Show Me the Money, he was under Zico and Paloalto's Team. He placed second in Show Me The Money Season 4, but has been the most successful contestant on digital music charts, with his Semi-Final song 'Fear' the best performing song of the season, Turtle Ship, Moneyflow, Okey Dokey and Victim + Poppin’ Bottles.

Controversy

SMTM

Mino's controversial lyrics on the July 10 episode of Show Me the Money 4 was criticized by netizens and caught the attention of the Korean Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists who demanded an apology from the rapper, causing him to post an apology through WINNER's official Facebook page, but it was not accepted by the association who asked for a formal apology from Mino and the show, stating in their website that "Not only did the lyrics sexually humiliate all women of Korea, but it also defamed Korean women's health, as well as the 4000 obstetrics and gynecology doctors registered in our association". On July 14, the association stated through a press release that Mino, as well as his label, YG Entertainment, have both sent their letters of apology and clips of his performance has since been deleted.[10][11][12][13]
