In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the spectator is a type of aberration related to the beholder.

Publication history

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition (1977–1988)

The spectator first appeared in the adventure module The Secret of Bone Hill (1981),[1] and then appeared in the original first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[2] The spectator was further detailed, along with the searechter (marine spectator) in Dragon #139 (November 1988).[3]

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition (1989–1999)

The spectator appeared in second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons for the Forgotten Realms setting under the "beholder-kin" entry in Monstrous Compendium Volume Three: Forgotten Realms Appendix (1989),[4] and reprinted under the "beholder" entry in the Monstrous Manual (1993).[5] The spectator also appeared in I, Tyrant (1996).[6]

Dungeons & Dragons 3.0 edition (2000–2002) and Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition (2003–2007)

The spectator appeared in third edition for the Forgotten Realms under the "beholderkin" entry in Monstrous Compendium: Monsters of Faerûn (2001).[7] The spectator also appeared under the "beholderkin" entry in Lords of Madness (2005).[8]

Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition (2014–)

A spectator appears in the final section of the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure, included in the 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set. The spectator also appears in the 5th edition Monster Manual.[9]

Description

A spectator is an extraplanar relative of the beholder with four eyestalks. Somewhat mild and even-tempered, spectators have even been known to form friendships with other creatures, a trait that no other beholderkin or true beholder ever displays.
