Categorization

[edit]

Wikipedia has a strict rule about the application of categories to an article: you apply ONLY the NARROWEST subcategory that is applicable. That is, if she's in Category:Canadian pop singers, then you DO NOT simultaneously file her under Category:Pop singers, Category:Singers and Category:Musicians as well. This is not a negotiable rule, and we are not going to make an exception just for Allison Crowe just because one anonymous user perceives it as "limiting" her, when that exception isn't made for anybody else on Wikipedia. Nothing exceptional was being sought in this instance. There were numerous other examples of artists not so narrowly categorized. People have been actively editing such listings and the narrowest categorization sought by the rule-makers is now much more standard form across the site - though there remain 190 Wikipedia pages in Category:Singers, 192 pages in Category:Singer-songwriters - and many more pages in similarly inclusive categories. Right now, Ani DiFranco is still listed in Category:Folk_singers. Still, it seems clear that such category listings may, ultimately, have no place in Wikipedia. Ani can then be "the little American folk-singer that could"!

That's a reason to clean up bad existing categorization, not a reason to perpetuate more of it. Bearcat 07:26, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Should this really be classified as a "biography"?

[edit]

I don't agree with the classification of this article as a biography. Allison Crowe's inclusion in Wikipedia is solely because of her role as a musician, and this article is primarily about her music, not her.

As a practical matter, applying "biography" standards here is inappropriate given that she is only 24 years old (at this writing), and only recently has ceased to live with her parents.

If anyone can make a case why this should remain as a biography, please speak up here. Otherwise I will wait until some time has passed and then remove the biography tagging.

"Biography" is standard terminology on Wikipedia for any article about a person. The only way this article could be not a "biography" is to not exist at all, and I don't believe that's what you're suggesting. Bearcat 19:25, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Bearcat. So "biography" it stays. I guess I'd have to address this matter as a question of which biography standards should apply to which biographies, which is more than I want to take on right now. Rohan Jayasekera 04:54, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

7000 kilometre breadth of Canada

[edit]

homes spanning the 7000 kilometre breadth of Canada

This sounds like it was copied from somebody's promotional material, and is also self-evidently wrong. It is, in fact, 4646 km from Nanaimo to Corner Brook, airport-to-airport (reference here). I propose this be changed to simply, "spanning the breadth of Canada." --Tedd (talk) 05:12, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I removed it, it's a pointless tidbit of trivia. If she was living in Kuala Lumpur (or anywhere else) instead, nobody would mention the distance from her first home.--Boffob (talk) 19:59, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
actually, it's not at all pointless - you obviously don't live in Canada!! anyone in this country recognizes how unusual and remarkable it is that anyone would have their two primary residences on entirely opposite sides of the vast country that is Canada - and, if you've ever made the trip from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, you'd never consider it trivial or pointless; many Canadian touring acts, let alone average Canadians, do not in their lifetimes travel this full distance; that Allison Crowe does it as a regular commute between her two homes is more than unique and noteworthy; now, Tedd, if you are correct about the distance, then, yes, that aspect need be changed for accuracy - cheers, Ad
p.s. I can see wherein lies the distance point - Tedd, you're counting airmiles, and the 7000 km. figure is clearly road miles across Canada (which is more often the way it's toured); according to Mapquest (reference http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Corner+Brook&1s=NL&2c=Nanaimo&2s=BC ) the distance between Corner Brook and Nanaimo is 4311.40 miles equal to 6938.52 km. which, by the time you've covered it, surely seems like a brisk 7000 km. So, it IS 7000 km between these two points if you travel overland, and it's still a significant commute of 4600+ km by air. The relevant point being, as you note, it's the breadth of Canada - ad mare usq mare - so, d'accord re your proposed change to the simple, undeniable, "spanning the breadth of Canada." ~ Ad —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.216.9.65 (talk) 10:46, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Boffob, you obviously don't live in Malaysia, either - where my Mother's born and raised. Maybe the best comparison in that country would be between Taiping in West Malaysia, and Tawau in the east. If you had a home in each place, people would find it highly notable - and, still, you'd only be traversing some 1200 miles or some 1900 km. A better comparison, and, one which may make things more clear, if you live in the UK, or know people there, would be a situation in which a person had two homes in the UK - one at Land's End in Cornwall, and the other in John O'Groats, Caithness. People may consider you balmy, but, you can be sure, they'd not consider it trivial or pointless to note. And, still, these extreme tips of that nation are 1350 km apart - less than one-third to one-fifth the distance commute that the Canadian singer-songwriter subject to discussion here covers regularly. That may be balmy, too - though, certainly not in climates! - best, Ad —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.216.9.65 (talk) 11:14, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
