Proposed reversal to Andropogon gerardii

[edit]

gerardii is the accepted nomenclature for this species. The link purporting a new specific epithet proposed by the USDA is a dead link and I cannot find any other info on this proposed change. The USDA is currently using gerardii in its official publications (as cited in article). The redirect from Andropogon gerardii to Andropogon gerardi should be deleted and the article renamed from Andropogon gerardi to Andropogon gerardii to keep with accept nomenclature.

Andropogon gerardi → ? – Andropogon gerardii is the accepted nomenclature for this species. The link purporting a new specific epithet proposed by the USDA is a dead link and I cannot find any other info on this proposed change. Meanwhile the USDA is using gerardii in its official publications (referenced in the article). The current redirect from Andropogon gerardii to Andropogon gerardi should be deleted and the Andropogon gerardi article renamed Andropogon gerardii. Oppose. I'm having no trouble with the USDA GRIN link. IPNI and Tropicos also note that the gerardi is not to be corrected to gerardii. IPNI, GRIN, and Tropicos (when it includes nomenclatural notes) are highly authoritative. That other USDA websites (e.g. USDA PLANTS) are using gerardii does not make it correct. Plantdrew (talk) 16:59, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The GRIN link does appear to be working now, it was not before. According to IPNI, Vitman incorrectly wrote it as "gerardi" and IPNI has made the decision to retain that original form and not use the corrected form of "gerardii" (which is not the same as them stating that the epithet is not to be corrected to "gerardii"). GRIN does state that the correction to "gerardii" is not permissible. I am curious when the decision to revert from the corrected form of "gerardii" back to the original Vitman form of "gerardi" was made. In the 1990s when I was heavily involved in genomic studies of it this was not an issue, it was "gerardii." Now I am coming back to it and finding it listed here as "gerardi" even though common use in the literature still seems to favor "gerardii." Thanks.Sccgeography (talk) 22:41, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. I withdraw my proposal to move this article, and have re-edited my edits to conform the article back to the use of "gerardi." After 30 years of saying "gerardii" it will be interesting to see how long it takes me to conform though. Sccgeography (talk) 22:58, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
