Numbering

[edit]

'eight wings of five stories each, numbered 0-4' doesn't make sense. clarification is in order.
I agree. I will guess. Each wing have the stories and numbered 0-4, bottom is considered the basement. How much it is a basement varies with the topology as to if it appears to be a basement. Also numbering is as it is on a ship, even numbers on one side, odd numbered wings on other side. Each wing has varied ages. Wings 7-8 were added since World War II. Wings 1 and 2 by current numbering were added ???

This makes sense for a postal system. However, wings 1-3 used to be on one side (left looking at it from the front), 4-6 on the other. Don't know how the newer wings 7 and 8 fit in to this scheme. Student7 (talk) 21:08, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you stand in Tecumseh Court facing the main entrance to Bancroft Hall, odd numbered wings are to your left, even numbers to your right. The only wings visible from this location are 1 and 3, 2 and 4. Each of the eight wings consists of 5 "decks", numbered 0 thru 4 PLUS basements. The five decks have all of the midshipman rooms plus most offices. The basements house support facilities such as barbershops, tailor shop, bowling alley, and lockers for mids to store their stuff over the summer. I believe that the 0 = 1st main floor convention is also used in Europe. Bgreenfl (talk) 18:04, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

0 deck = 1st floor is a nautical convention. --ElKevbo (talk) 18:08, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sims and Evans

[edit]

It was old plebe lore that the only people who could weat their caps in Memorial Hall were Rear Admirals William Sims and Robley Dunglison Evans. Anyone know why? Is this worth mentioning in their bios? Student7 (talk) 18:46, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because their bust (statue) is present there and an authorized hat rack. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wfoj2 (talkcontribs) 01:38, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is an inside joke. Their busts are sculpted wearing their uniform hats. They are not "authorized hat racks". -USNA'86 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.121.18.254 (talk) 17:32, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
