Not a mayor.
[edit]Bernard Cohn was never a mayor of Los Angeles. He was an acting mayor, the same job that the president of the City Council has now whenever the mayor leaves the city. When Cohn died, none of the articles ever suggested that he had been mayor. He was always referred to as an ex-councilman. GeorgeLouis (talk) 05:17, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Pio Pico
[edit]According to this Article Bernard Cohn died on 1 November 1889. At the same time it is said there was a court case going on between him an Pio Pico in 1893. Something must be wrong. In 1893 Cohn was already dead. --Walter1957 (talk) 06:13, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Errors deriving from library reference citation #3 and several mistakes made in LA Times article cited
[edit]Hi there- I apologize for writing at such length, but this is a bit off a tangled web that is difficult to unravel. The issues I am pointing out mostly pertain to one or two small sections of the article and two of the citations. I am not trying to throw doubt on the article as a whole.
Unfortunately, there are number factual errors to be found in this article. The main source of misinformation seems to be citation #3 which contains a great deal of misleading information. There are other errors stemming from mistakes made in the Los Angeles Times of the 1800’s.
Much of the confusion and error that is to be found in the citations is due to the fact that Bernard Cohn’s son, Ceasar, who later went by the name Kaspar or Caspar has gotten confused with Kaspare Cohn (1839-1916) a very prominent pioneer businessman and philanthropist who was unrelated to Bernard.
Bernard Cohn did not have a brother named Kaspar and a sister named Mrs. Simon Cohn. The LA Times article that this stands on has made an error. Kaspar and Mrs. Simon Cohn were Bernard’s son and daughter not his brother and sister. To further the confusion Bernard’s daughter’s married name is not Cohn, but Cahen.
The whole paragraph regarding Bernard’s “First Family” is contradictory in that it begins by saying Kaspar is his brother and then says two sentences later that Kaspar is his son.
Similarly, the first sentence says Mrs. Simon Cohn is his sister, then states that Carrie Cahen is his daughter. These two individuals are one and the same person. Bernard Cohn’s daughter Carrie married Simon Cahen.
Another important error appears in the same short paragraph. Bernard Cohn did not marry Hulda Meyer as stated. Bernard married Esther Norton.
Other statements that mention Bernard as a wool buyer and having had something to do with a memorial clinic stem from reference #3 are also in error. The 3rd citation for this article written in the 1930’s by Florence Goddard is replete with error as she seems to have blended the life story of Kaspare Cohn (1839-1916) with that of Bernard and his son Kaspar. The result is a jumbled account that makes no sense and causes great confusion, which is then partially repeated in the article.
Kaspare Cohn (1839-1916) –pioneer Merchant , banker, real estate investor, and wool and hides buyer, founder of Union Bank of California and Cedar Sinai Hospital is unrelated to Bernard and his family. This Mr. Cohn’s wife was named Hulda.
Citation #3 makes Bernard’s son who was originally named Ceasar and later variously Caspar or Kaspar into the banker / hospital philanthropist by mixing him up with the much older and well known Kaspare Cohn (1839-1916).
Being new to Wikipedia editing, I am not quite sure how to proceed. I would like to edit this article and can provide counter references, but how does the Wikipedia community view that when the source of these errors are the original citations?
There are many other more reliable sources for information on Bernard Cohn and the points outlined above are easy to demonstrate with better-researched source materials. Should I provide citation.
It might be a good idea to put together an article on Kaspare Cohn (1839-1916) as he was a notable Los Angeles pioneer who founded Union Bank of Califiornia, Cedar Sinai Hospital, and the city of Montebello. I am hoping to create such an article after I have learned more about collaborating on Wikipedia.
Bernard Cohn was a very important figure in the pioneer development of Los Angeles. His story deserves to be told accurately and not conflated with that of another important figure, Kaspare Cohn , whose story also needs to be told correctly.
Any feedback or suggestions would be most welcome –I would like to be able to help set this record straight.
Thanks,
