Duration of 9(LP)
[edit]Someone should put the duration of the songs of the album "9", I can't because I don't have the CD, Yet.
The Mercury Prize...
[edit]The Mercury Prize page doesn't say 'O' won their prize for 2003. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gargletheape (talk • contribs)
- Good catch! An editor changed that a few weeks ago from Shortlist Music Prize. I can see the confusion since the Mercury Prize issues a "shortlist" of finalists, but Rice and O were never included. --Dhartung | Talk 05:06, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Why was the comment about Britney Spears and Colin Farrell talking at his show removed?
- Why do people (probably the same editor) keep adding this without even bothering to use a proper cite? I think it's funny but trivial. If it appears again it will be immediately removed. --Dhartung | Talk 18:56, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm removing the bit about Rice's Law: if you search for this group on Facebook, you get the following, from the game's creators themselves: 'This is, as would appear, a vain attempt at inventing a daft game in order to verify something we added to Ricey's Wikipedia page when we were drunk.' See WP:NOT. eiscir 17:18, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Pshaw, not even worth discussing. Just remove future nonsense edits with an edit summary. --Dhartung | Talk 20:25, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I'm removing the recent reference to Rice's "momma smurf" and "pappa smurf" parentage. I think it very unlikely that two smurfs could beget such a (physically) normal child. Cobun 21:08, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Style
[edit]This article should at least give some minimal description to the style of his music. Badagnani 07:22, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Well, I'll put something basic. Feel free to tweak it. It's my first day on Wikipedia, and I doubt I'm going to instantly be a great writer for it. ;P
[ Attached to the statement after saying he is an Irish folksinger ] Damien Rice's song writing style generally consists of an entire song only having three or four chords, meaning his rhythm guitar is notably basic. However, in most of his songs, Damien Rice has a series of hammer ons, making the riffs sound more interesting. Damien Rice rarely writes a song that isn't vocally driven, meaning that his singing parts are often far from monotonous, and often embrace his high singing range. He is also known for including a developed cello part in most of his songs.
I don't really know what you'd look for. Feel free to ask me about it. All I live for is Damien, and I know all of his songs by heart and perform them (both the guitar / vocal parts) frequently. I'd be able to help get info, I'm just not sure how to present it... or even WHAT to present. I really want to spiff this page up... Charlie55744 05:52, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Opening paragraph
[edit]the first paragraph is not fact it is oppinion. in my oppinion he is known better by his songs being in 'the oc' in their first series. Kevlar69er 20:26, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
Do you mean his O/9 thing? I think it's pretty safe. I mean, yeah, it was kinda popular from OC, but then also from Closer, and also from Grey's Anatomy, and Lost, etc. Why did someone take out the 2 or so paragraphs showing all the TV shows and movies he starred in? We need those back. The opening statement should just let us know that his singles and B-Sides CD weren't his most popular things, and that O and 9 are representitve of him. Charlie55744 05:42, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Singles
[edit]It says that 9 Crimes is featuring Lisa Hannigan but that she's uncredited, and then in the biography, it says she's a part of the band... suggestions? Abcdemily 02:26, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
She is a part of the band, credited in the other albums. Apparently, not the single. I haven't verified if she was uncredited in the single, however. Charlie55744 05:40, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
taper friendly?
[edit]Rice is in the "taper friendly" category. Anyone have a reference for this? --Allen 22:26, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Should be removed as we have already said in his own article that he doesn't like to be recorded or even photographed.
New edit to biography
[edit]Someone needs to add a reference to the last paragraph from the biography section. It discusses the split of one of his inging partners and appears to be taken word for word from Damien Rice's website.
Collaborations?
[edit]Can anyone explain why some of the collaborations are mentioned, specifically 'Burn The Maps', 'Skylarkin' and 'The Swell Season', because I'm almost sure he had nothing to do with either album, neither do the album's Wiki pages mention him. I'll remove them unless someone knows why. Phantompie
Lisa stars in them. Lisa is, or, perhaps, WAS, part of the band "Damien Rice" He probably plays guitar as well, considering he plays guitar back up for everything she sings... 69.19.14.19 07:32, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
I second that. Double-u tee eff. I mean come on, 50 Cent? I guess it's possible, but how plausible? I'll tag it with {{ref improve section}}. SweetNightmares (awaken) 01:26, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
Damien Rice (Band)?
[edit]69.19.14.19 above pointed out that Lisa was a part of Damien's band... So this made me wonder, should there be a Damien Rice (band) and include information on members? I see there are pages for people who are listed as being part of the Damien Rice act (Lisa Hannigan, Shane Fitzsimons, Tom Osander, Vyvienne Long, etc.) but I see no place where the people who play with Damien Rice are listed/discussed together as part of Damien Rice (band)... Other than the small paragraph in his career section. Someone let me know if I am totally off base here, it just seams with Damien Rice being a band named after the artist that a true distinctions should be made, and Damien Rice would have the associated acts of Juniper (band) and Damien Rice (band). Like Dave Matthews has Dave Matthews Band and for his "solo work" Dave Matthews & Friends but if you goto this solo album Some Devil it is still associated with just Dave Matthews. --65.27.208.196 07:46, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Photo
[edit]I'm sick of looking for actors and such and finding pictures that are oh-so-small or blurry or "We don't have a free picture, do you have one?" just for the sake of free-use no-copyright bullshit. I know it's some legal mumbojumbo but it defeats the whole purpose of creating this free encyclopaedia. If people can quote a text and reference it at the end, why can't we use publication photos or whatever that are obviously clearer (think IMDB) for the sake of clarity and just reference or link where we get the photos from? This would be so much better (for Wikipedia itself, too) rather than using some dodgy fan-submitted pictures taken by an amateur.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Z3088065 (talk • contribs) 15:39, 7 August 2007.
- I have, of course, reverted the change and nominated the image for deletion because it's not free. Like you said, we are trying to build a free encyclopaedia, not one based on stolen pictures owned by someone who didn't release it under one of the necessary creative commons licenses.--Svetovid 21:33, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Well, STEALING would be to use the photo without properly referencing it or acknowledging the copyright owner. Besides, as I previously said, it would be beneficial for both the individual in the photo and Wikipedia itself to have a proper photo. On other pages, pictures of book covers or promotional movie posters ("scaled down, low-res") are allowed to be used for similar reasons. I don't see how such a purpose would be detrimental towards the copyright owner. If anything, they gain more recognition, be it the artist or the photographer, whoever has the copyright to the photo. STEALING would be if one uploads someone else's photo and claims it as their own without properly acknowledging the owner.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Z3088065 (talk • contribs) 06:07, 8 August 2007.
- First, sign your comments with ~~~~ after the post. Second, please move your copyright/fair use related debate to elsewhere.
What you are mainly talking about is fair use, and such images cannot be uploaded to Commons, only to Wikipedia with the appropriate copyright tag and fair use rationale.
However, it's always better to use a free image (from Commons) than a fair-use image because, as you mentioned, we want to build a free encyclopaedia, not a fair-use one.--Svetovid 11:24, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Gig at rock werchter
[edit]Among his 2007 appearances his gig at Rock Werchter on the 1st of July should be added because Roch Werchter has in the last couple of years been voted best festival of the world thrice by the ILMC so it's big and good. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Snelleeddy (talk • contribs) 22:25, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
In popular culture
[edit]Don't people think this 'in popular culture' paragraph is a bit too long and hard to read? I suggest we make it a list of songs and where they're featured. If everyone's happy I'll do that. Jing.t86 21:47, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Were there other Irish songs in the Shrek film series apart from 9 Crimes? i'm Irish and hope there were. Anonymous —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.97.111.90 (talk) 18:21, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Forget I said anything. The Thrills have a song in Shrek 4, don't they? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.97.111.90 (talk) 18:26, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Katharine Rice
[edit]He is also a distant relative of the famous Dubliner Katharine Rice.
Who is Katharine Rice, and is she really famous? There is no wikipedia page on her, and I can't find anything in google either. lk (talk) 15:12, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Genre
[edit]Is he really folk? As a frequent listener of both Folk and Damien Rice's music they really don't compare. Damien Rice seems to have more in common with alternative/soft rock; in fact that's pretty much what it says in the main CDDB's out there. I'll remove the folk reference if no-one objects within the next day NetHawk (talk) 14:30, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Biography
[edit]The article lists a lot about his music affiliatins, but is almost completely devoid of any kind of biographical information, other than that provided in the opening paragraph and infobox. A new section should be created devoted to his personal life so as to help give more about the actual person Damien Rice, not just his music. QuidProQuo23 00:25, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with you, QuidProQuo23. This article does require improvement (in several regards), something that I hope to get around to doing soon! Of course, you could always take the plunge yourself, too ;) Maedin\talk 21:23, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
To IP editor 79.97.111.90
[edit]Your edits are not all bad, but you appear to be insisting on adding content that is unsourced and inaccurate, to this article. Please refrain from giving Damien's current place of residence, as it is unsourced. At least five times you have added that he resides in Kent, which I (and others) have reverted, and you today listed it as Manhattan. Without a source, this information should not be added to the article. You are also changing the lead to say that Damien was born and raised in County Kildare, Ireland, while the source which is attached to that statement clearly says that he was not born there, only raised there. In addition, you add unencyclopaedic words like "even", "wait for it", and "here are some examples", all of which are inappropriate—please see WP:Peacock. You have been making changes like these since at least the 20th September and have been reverted several times, by several editors. Other of your edits are clearly well-intentioned, and it would be greatly appreciated if you would be more conscious of the content you add or change in the future. Thank you! :-) Maedin\talk 21:46, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- My edits are not all bad?89.101.46.212 (talk) 11:49, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Well, they would be even better and would probably remain if you could source them. What started this talk of Rice living in Kent anyway? I live in Kent and haven't heard anything about this! Stephenjh (talk) 12:47, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Maybe you'd also like to stopped indulging in sockpuppetry, vandalism, removal of well sourced content... ~~ [ジャム][t - c] 18:36, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Kent?
[edit]My bezzie told me Damien lives in Kent. I'm from Whitstable and I've seen Damien walking near where I go to Secondary School. 79.97.111.90 (talk) 20:57, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Mr PhD
- None of that constitutes a verifiable source on Rice's current residence. DoktorDec (talk) 21:43, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Cover version of "Creep"
[edit]I've added the detail about Rice's cover version of Radiohead's "Creep", on the compilation album Sounds Eclectic - not sure why it wasn't there already Dom Kaos (talk) 10:57, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Discography move, and article expansion
[edit]Considering the discography section is rather long in this article, perhaps it would be better to give it it's own page, also have decided to help article out, will be expanding various sections in the next few days. Will be deleting a fair bit too though. Alot of this is trivia about concert performances and songs which were used in tv shows, not really relevant. --RavensFists (talk) 17:50, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
First Damien Rice Interview In Three Years
[edit]- Hot Press by Olaf Tyaransen for anyone interested. "Rice talks openly and in detail about the difficult circumstances surrounding the split with Lisa Hannigan, as well as looking back on the extraordinary story of his rise to international success". --candle•wicke 01:26, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Paolo Nutini

Fan POV tag
[edit]I have placed a Fan POV tag on the article. This is not uncommon with BLP's of musicians and celebrities. I'm sure it can be cleaned up without major changes to the article. The areas I have issues with are:
- Trivial quotes from the subject musing about his life
- Text organized according to artificial topics such as bands and albums. We have to remember its the story of a man's life, not just the history of his albums.
I will work on rectifying these items over time. Help and discussion are always welcome. Cheers!-- — Keithbob • Talk • 18:36, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
- I've revised, edited and reorganized the entire article for tone, content and organization. I will now remove the tag. -- — Keithbob • Talk • 19:16, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
Collaborations
[edit]I have removed the following from the list:
- Movin' On Up, with 50 Cent on the album Night Shift: Live from Bonnaroo Festival' (recorded at the 2008 Bonnaroo Festival)
- Burn the Maps, The Frames
- The Swell Season, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová
If someone can find a reliable source for these, he or she may re-add them.
I have added references for collaborations that could be confirmed through a quick internet search. I left ones for which I could not find a reliable source but seemed plausible, tagging them with "citation needed." I believe the section is improved to the point at which I may remove the {{refimprove}} template. SweetNightmares (awaken) 23:27, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Damien Rice discography
