Creation, notability, and title
[edit]This article was created in response to the call at WT:LGBT#Honoring Harvey Milk.
It occurs to me that there may be a WP:BLP1E issue here, however I believe that there is sufficient notability for an article since condition three at BLP1E is not met. I believe it also meets the "separate article" test at WP:ONEEVENT, since "the event [was] highly significant, and the individual's role within it [was] a large one."
One way to characterize Viñales role, is as "an individual [who] plays a major role in a minor event." There is currently no article on the Snake Pit bar raid itself, and if this is because the raid is seen as a minor event, but still notable enough for an article, then probably this article should be renamed to "Snake Pit bar raid", and Diego Viñales should be a redirect to it.
Given the easy availability of numerous sources about the event, I currently lean toward this last solution. Mathglot (talk) 07:17, 29 October 2017 (UTC)
- There is a fair bit of biographical information in one source (Eubanks-2017) which contains an entire chapter on Viñales (although no birthdate, afaict), so I'm a little less sure of the proper article focus than I was before. I will be updating the bio section from this source (and any others I find) so let's see where this is heading. Mathglot (talk) 20:36, 29 October 2017 (UTC)
- There appears to be sufficient biographical info beyond the incident to maintain this as a biographical article, imho, rather than as a one-event article. Arguing against the former approach, would be the fact that little is known about Viñales after his recovery, including whether he returned to Argentina, or is even alive. Arguing for it, is the fact that his role in the incident is major, much more so than, say, the Howard Brennan example given at WP:BIO1E who nevertheless rates a biographical article, and some detail about Viñales's life is known; hence my feeling this should be kept as a biographical article. Please discuss. Mathglot (talk) 21:35, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- The (Eubanks-2017) source is not a reliable source for biographical information of Diego Viñales nor do I think it claims to be. Eubanks' book is more memoir than anything, and it's marketed as containing "flights of historical fancy." There is no indication that Eubanks' chapter on Viñales is anything other than fabulated (that is, based on factual events but nonetheless created by the author); in fact, Eubanks has described it as such, saying in a 2017 interview that certain chapters, including the one on Viñales, "were my way of telling stories about people who may have been brought back to life just temporarily. I wanted to put a little joy into tragic stories." Of another chapter he says, "I had a great time constructing the meeting between Ed Koch and Joey Ramone . . . because it didn't happen." [1]
- Basically nothing is known about Diego beyond the few contemporaneous sources repeated by gay historians like Duberman and Carter. This biographical section is, in essence, fiction and should be deleted. Mlrqueerhistory (talk) 16:44, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
Last name spelling
[edit]I've seen both spellings Viñales and Vinales in sources. The fact that there are a lot more of the latter than the former in English reports doesn't sway me one way or the other about which one may be correct, so still looking for something definitive. For example, there is a Viñales Valley in Cuba, and English sources regularly spell it without the tilde, which in that case is wrong. With a person's name, you never know, so we need a good source. Mathglot (talk) 10:26, 29 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Mathglot: Viñales is the correct Spanish spelling. Vinales is an anglicization. Cf Maverick Viñales, Isaac Viñales. I don't have a good source for it though... Catrìona (talk) 11:01, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
What has happened to him after release from the hospital
[edit]What happened to Diego after relesed from the hospital. Was he still charged with a crime or was he released? And what happened with him later in life? Allyn (talk) 06:26, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
