Fair use rationale for Image:Dragonsdawn.gif

[edit]

Image:Dragonsdawn.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 03:52, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Retcon

[edit]

I disagree with the comment in this article stating that certain things were retconned, there is no evidence in any of the books to support such a statement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.227.222.52 (talk) 03:56, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I just reread Dragonsdawn, and it's clear that the first generation of dragons are much smaller than what would be known in the later-occurring (earlier-written) books. It is stated that the dragons are expected to increase in size and strength over time, which is consistent with the portrayal of the Oldtimers's (brought forward by Lessa) dragons as significantly smaller than the "present day" dragons of Dragonflight and following. I'm removing the statement about this being a retcon, as it's unsourced and disputed, and so fair game for deletion. If someone wants to add this claim back to the page, please provide a citation when doing so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.173.194.187 (talk) 00:40, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The prologues to the original trilogy books clearly state, right in the first paragraphs, that the first threadfall after the arrival of the colonists occured only after several generations (the prologue in "Dragonquest" says during or after the second generation). In "Dragonsdawn" however, the first threadfall occurs after only "eight years of close association" [with the fire-lizards] in the first paragrah of part tow. The project to genetically engineer the dragons then starts right away.
To me this seems to be a a clear inconstistency.

Dragonsdawn also originates "close association" soon after touchdown.
Absolutely right as a matter of fact. Someone has noted that AIM moved First Pass up fifty years so the settlers would experience it. It was crucial to Pern in-universe, and it must have been crucial for AIM as a writer, that the heroes of war and colonization Benden and Boll, etc, dealt with First Pass. [As original researcher I add that it makes Dawn work also as the story of girl and boy we meet on ship.] Vaguely I think Todd M may be the one who noted. Certainly it was crucial to him as the writer of Dragonsblood that year 58 is the end rather than beginning of First Pass.
Whether/where/when should retcon be a theme of our coverage rather than, say, a chronological inconsistency simply be footnoted while relating this book to others or placing it on a Pern timeline? At a later stage, perhaps grade B, or if we have dispute now, only outside sources will support retcon as a theme.
There is a lot of reimagination in the course of the series and some of it concerns simple matters of fact that we may handle adequately without outside sources.
These issues are vital regarding Pern, perhaps also List of Pern books and Dragonriders of Pern, and of course Dragon and Wher. They are secondary or less for articles on particular books. --P64 (talk) 15:33, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
