Areas and IPO[edit]

1.) what is jonan and josei areas? should this say the Kanto, Chubu, and Kansai regions? These seem a lot more standard. Or "in Tokyo, Chiba, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe"

I see the reason for this is because the press release used is very very old and not reflective of the companies current operations

Looking at the stock performance pages, I can tell the IPO was sometime in dec. 2006 , but don't know exactly when. If you happen to know exactly when then please insert the information and I'll see if I can track down a source.Statisticalregression 10:08, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There seems be a lot of edits recently... I want to know why this link was added "News and commentary related to teaching English in Japan" when it does seem to be serious website. The external link has been removed for the time being. The user freebilly has posted links to the same site on several japanese eikaiwa articles. Without some sort of good justification, I would consider it spam. Please justify it. --Hydenobuyuki (talk) 04:19, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

株式会社 in this article is written as kabushiki kaisha; however, in the GEOS article it is written as kabushiki gaisha.
The wikipedia article on this type of company says

Both kabushiki kaisha and the rendaku form kabushiki gaisha are used. The "K" spelling is much more common in the names of companies and in English-language legal literature, whereas the "G" pronunciation is more common in Japanese. In Japanese, "kabushiki gaisha" can be used as a prefix (e.g. 株式会社電通 Kabushiki Gaisha Dentsū) or as a suffix (e.g. トヨタ自動車株式会社 Toyota Jidōsha Kabushiki Gaisha).

Gaba ginza studio[edit]

i restored part of the article that was deleted that actually defined what the "next generation" learning studio consisted of, and changed the tense to reflect past-tense as it is my understanding that it's not longer open (or not being used in that way). If someone could just put in the date when the studio closed/changed that would be great Statisticalregression (talk) 05:23, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

English teaching jobs with benefits?[edit]

I've been teaching English in Japan for three years, and I've never had a paid holiday or vacation leave or unemployment insurance or a raise or any guarantee that I would have a certain number of lessons to teach. I question the statement that most English teaching jobs in Japan offer these benefits. I teach classes at Japanese companies through an English school, and I'm paid hourly and have to work about an hour of unpaid labor (lesson planning) for every hour I'm paid (time in the classroom). I was briefly a member of an English teacher's union (The General Union), but this is apparently so widespread that they didn't seem to think this was unusual or a problem. I recently began working at Gaba too, and I receive no benefits there either, or pay for lesson planning, or any guarantee that I'll have lessons to teach, but the lesson planning time required is much less. At both jobs, I end up making between 1500 and 1800 yen per hour if you include lesson planning time, but it's much easier to entertain one student than 6-13 students. It is true though, that transportation to the company classes is paid, and transportation to Gaba's "learning studio" is not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.5.139.85 (talk) 12:53, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"This means that teachers do not receive the benefits afforded most language teachers in Japan - paid annual leave, transportation costs, and unemployment insurance" is both uncited and not really related to the corporate information that this article is about. Perhaps, it should be rewritten something along the lines of "This means that teachers are not full companies employees and do not receive employee benefits" To go into details is not required since the reader should know what being an employee vs. a contract worker entails and if they don't know, they can click the employee link and read more about employment types. --219.108.24.231 (talk) 10:46, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Another thing about teaching at Gaba is that the number of classes available fluctuates wildly. If no one books your lessons, you don't get paid. There have been days when I only had one lesson to teach! 75% booking is good, 50% is not unusual.118.4.190.177 (talk) 03:01, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

POV[edit]

Someon dropped in a POV tag but didn't follow up with a note on the talk here. The edit summary complained of use of Union sources. My personal perspective is that the material sourced to the union is just like material sourced to the Gaba company website, that they are primary sources of equal varacity and allowable under WP guidelines and rules. I agree. There was a comment on the history page for the Gaba wiki article by "61.23.136.72" which said "(This webpage cotains inaccurate information and outright fabrications; they cite the General Union webpage as their source, which is not an impartial source. Third party verifiable sources are needed)". However, they didn't put a post on this talk page, nor did they point out any specific examples of the "inaccurate information" and "outright fabrications". It seems they just wish to keep out any information which comes from the union. Unless the claim is backed up with specifics or at least a post on the talk page, I don't see why the disputed neutrality claim should be allowed to remain on the main page. Belting System[edit]

I don't see the relevance of a Belting System to an article about the Company itself.

Also, it seems unethical to have items cited as "According to an article on Gaba's internal website".

Is there a good reason why this section is encyclopaedic? That type of information could easily go on some other website but doesn't fit in a wikipedia page about a company.

Someone care to adequately justify it? Otherwise, I think it should be removed

While I think the belting system might be mentionable as it's part of how Gaba calculates wages - there's WAY to much marketing on this article, example: the "overseas recuriting" section - come on WP articles are not for use as advertising space. -Of course, the information could easily go elsewhere but this entire article is a hackjob by the General Union to paint Gaba in a bad light. Most of the information cited is backed by the Union webpage. Gaba is a public company and all information related to its earnings and expenditures is publicly available so I would like to invite anyone reading the article to compare the numbers as posted in this article with what you see in the Financial Statements.


The article seems well-researched and referenced to me. While it is true some of the links reference the union, others reference Gaba's own page and various other websites.

Lesson numbers bonus[edit]
