Reliable source for lead claim

[edit]

The lead makes the claim that "one million (Australians) are involved in shooting and firearms". However the source for that is some random who is a gun enthusiast. The figure seems too high and the source unreliable. "Are involved in" is also too vague. I think it should be removed. - Shiftchange (talk) 20:37, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've marked it as dubious, which will also link to this discussion page. The SSAA, which is the largest shooting club in Australia has somewhere between 170,000 to 200,000 members. There are other clubs of course, and some shooters (farmers, cash-in-transit guards, etc) are not required to be members of clubs. The article Gun laws in Australia states that in 2007 there were 765,000 involved. This again was from SSAA. I've nothing against the SSAA as I am a member, but I would like to see statistics from the something more neutral such as the police licencing departments in each state.--Dmol (talk) 23:32, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just found the latest figures for SSAA. Their July 2015 magazine says they have 172,102 members. --Dmol (talk) 04:47, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
