More than good faith! Every Biography that I can find about Nathan states that Nathan had about 5 years voice and composition lessons with Corri. You are right: that doesn't really prove it. But having often used and quoted Nathan's book on singing it's impossible to believe that he could have written such a book on singing and the Bel canto technique without having had years of intensive lessons with someone like Corri. The book is just too good, as will as being technically complicated and informed - it is an important source: Cornelius Reid also quoted it regularly for his own books.--Ebrownless (talk) 11:31, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that the only source for this is Nathan's own entry about himself in Sainsbury's Music Dictionary of 1825 (an entry which is demonstrably unreliable in many other aspects). Although Nathan was (probably) apprenticed to Corri (and certainly worked in his business for a while) over a period, for much of that time Corri was in prison for debt or otherwise absent. When Robert Browning was taught singing by Nathan, Nathan's teaching methods were recalled by the poet as being extremely unorthodox, not based on the Italian tradition. Doubtless Nathan studied Corri's book -- but......--Smerus (talk) 17:00, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS My son was taught history by a descendant of Lempriere.--Smerus (talk) 17:02, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the information - it's been interesting corresponding with you! We can leave it as you have reversed it - maybe more evidence will come up. What is the descendant's name? --Ebrownless (talk) 20:16, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with the article

[edit]

Some examples: "indomitable refusal", "his second-rate musical abilities", "extraordinary life ended with an extraordinary death" (oh boy!) - these are peacock terms and POV, all presented as fact. "These not only in themselves diffused a spirit of philosemitism", "he undoubtedly paralleled himself", "Perhaps it was his early, heady success which led to him being profligate with money", "Nathan's glory days seemed over", "Nathan's two great enemies were debt and his own impetuosity" - the article has an unencylopedic tone and is full of speculation and vague wording. Year of birth

[edit]

I see 1792 in various places. Do we know for sure it was 1790? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 20:01, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
