Requested move
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: this page moved. The other two seem to have different issues than this one, which seemed quite clear. I suggest a different request or requests for the two others, which I agree should be retitled somehow. - GTBacchus(talk) 20:05, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
- John Munro (New Zealand politician) → JB Munro
- John Munro (politician) → John Munro (Westport politician)
- John Munro (New Zealand) → John Munro (Auckland politician)
– I thought it useful to come up with more suitable disambiguation for the three NZ politicians called John Munro. The living one is known as "JB" and that is now sourced. The other two need to be disambiguated by where they lived and were active. I'm not entirely sure whether I've got the naming conventions right for the latter two, hence I put this up as a move multi request for input by others. Once it's been done, the hatnotes could do with some refinement, pointing to both the other new Zealand politicians (with direct links), as well as the dab page. Schwede66 20:55, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- I've already dealt with the hatnotes. They would need to be adjusted when the pages get moved. Schwede66 03:23, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
- Note that I've put the other NZ politician triplet up for tidying up, too. Schwede66 09:44, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
- Support. The title's at the moment are a mess and Schwede's solution is a good one. Jenks24 (talk) 01:14, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
- Support. I don't recall the Invercargill MP being referred to as "John"; he was always "J. B." to local people. Daveosaurus (talk) 07:55, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
- Comment. Probably should be J. B. Munro to meet WP's normal naming conventions with initials. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:54, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
- Query. Can you provide a link to the naming conventions with initials? Is it covered in the conventions whether there is a space between the two initials (as you've done it here), or whether that shouldn't be there? I don't mind either way, but I'd rather be deliberate about these things. And if the conventions use fullstops, that's of course fine by me. Schwede66 19:04, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

- "There is no consensus for always using spaces between initials, neither for never using them. However, in most Wikipedia articles where the subject uses two consecutive initials, the space between initials is used." -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:33, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- True, but Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Abbreviations#Initials guideline suggest using period and space. --ClubOranjeT 11:46, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- I actually support the use of the space. I was quoting the relevant section to Schwede66. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:42, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yes I realised that, particularly as I EC's with your support below. Just backing up the section with a relevant guideline per User:Schwede66's original request. --ClubOranjeT 19:47, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- Partial support. John Munro (New Zealand politician) → J.B. Munro as commonly referred in sources and wrt WP naming per User:Necrothesp I agree with. The other two I agree should be renamed, but to John Munro (New Zealand politician born 1839) and John Munro (New Zealand politician born c.1798), mainly because they were not Westport and Auckland local body politicians, they were MPs for New Zealand, and the proposed names do not represent their constituencies (Buller and Marsden), which would create further confusion in themselves. Put the New Zealand bit in to differentiate from the Canadian politician.--ClubOranjeT 08:36, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- Support this proposal (as J. B. Munro of course). -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:37, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
