Merge proposal

[edit]

This article was created at roughly the same time as John C. Iffert - the other article contains more references and prose but this article name seems better (as he is named so by the Vatican)? JW 1961 Talk 19:28, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No. The Holy See Press Office calls him "John C. Iffert". See the announcement HERE. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 02:42, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That the articles be merged seems uncontroversial - we can't have two articles about the same person. However, I suspect that the title of the article should be John Iffert, based on a little Googling. The Vatican's announcement uses the initial, but Googling "John Iffert" bishop yields about 700 news hits, whereas Googling "John C Iffert" bishop (with or without the period) yields 5. If you don't restrict it to news you get more hits for both, but it's still more than 3:1 in favour of 'John Iffert', and many of the hits with the initial are quoting the Vatican's announcement. MOS:INITIALS says that we should only use the initial if the name is commonly written that way: I'd suggest copying the current content of John C. Iffert, which is the superior article, to this title, and redirecting John C. Iffert here. Girth Summit (blether) 09:06, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Girth Summit, Agree JW 1961 Talk 09:28, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging Bmclaughlin9, Shansav and Roberto221 for comment - if we all agree with this course of action, we can close and implement without further ado. Girth Summit (blether) 09:32, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Note to say that Roberto221 replied at Talk:John C. Iffert confirming that they were happy with this title being used, so I've performed move the text (which incorporates some of the text from this title) over here, and redirected that page. Girth Summit (blether) 14:44, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
