Elected?

[edit]

This will be resolved soon, but I don't believe Madigan has been elected yet. The ABC Senate results include less than three-quarters of the vote, more has to be counted yet.  -- Lear's Fool 11:59, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is it worth mentioning that the ABC computer has decided he's elected (based on ~76% of vote)? ABC link Donama (talk) 02:15, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not that i'm arguing for inclusion, but...

[edit]

If the Greens didn't get such a high primary vote and get a Senator elected in their own right (rather than scraping left parties together as has been the norm), is it correct that the count would never have resorted to scraping all the right votes together? Senate preferences are a funny thing... Timeshift (talk) 18:49, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The last candidate is usually elected by "scraping" various parties/candidates preferences together. Have a look at the 2nd and 3rd to last iterations of the progressive counts in the senate results and you'll see. In Madigan's case there was just enough socialist-leaning preference to get the Liberals dropping out of the count before him. So in a sense he's there instead of a Liberal candidate elected on DLP preferences.[1] Donama (talk) 22:47, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I have had a look at the counts. I actually added some good detail of how it panned out in to the article... "At this stage, preference counts indicate that the primary DLP vote (2.3 percent) in Victoria overtook the Family First Party on account of One Nation and Christian Democratic preferences, then inherited Family First preferences, then reached the 14.3 percent quota with Liberal/National preferences."
