Birth year question[edit]

Birth year probably 1926 (Taisho 15), though the 1994 English translation of his book (p. 23) gives "1923". A-giau 01:07, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Education[edit]

The article presently makes the unsourced statement "Though he did not reach a high level of formal education" which appears to be unsourced.

Wikidata links this entry in the Graduate University for Advanced Studies Research Information Repository, which shows a PhD thesis with the translated title "A Study on God-sending in the Ainu People -Focusing on the Saru River Basin-" whose author was Shigeru Kayano. I cannot see any evidence that he is not the subject of this article, and given the topic, it seems to me certain to be the same. Pinging Fram for their reasoning for the reverts. --RexxS (talk) 16:38, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The date of the PhD thesis is what gives me pause, plus the discrepancy with the text in the article (which may be wrong of course). Even if that Phd is his, he only got it near the end of his life. The simple "doctorate" that the infobox showed was not really helpful, it should say (if it is by him) when, and in what type of study to be of any use. In general, an infobox should not contain such information if it isn't in the article, and even less when it seemingly contradicts the article. Fram (talk) 07:12, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's reasonable, Fram, although my guess is that he had little formal education as a youth, but his achievements were recognised late in life and one of his dissertations was used to award him a doctorate. Of course, we're both just speculating, so it's probably best not to include education. I'll leave your version as it is, and just point out that we could still use Wikidata like this:
{{infobox person/Wikidata
| fetchwikidata=ALL
| suppressfields=education
}}
In case you change your mind. --RexxS (talk) 15:32, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Yes, your guess is as good as mine (perhaps better), so indeed it's better to leave it out. Fram (talk) 15:39, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
