[edit]1. How in the world does jugem translate to Lakitu?
2. "Lakitu is a Koopa in the Super Mario Bros. series of games from Nintendo. He is typically depicted riding in a cloud. The name is also sometimes used for an entire race of Koopas, all of whom fly about in this fashion." Isn't "Lakitu" primarily used for the entire "race"?
3. Has there ever been a canonical pronunciation offered? ("LAK-ee-tu"?)
— J44xm July 4, 2005 16:45 (UTC)
- 1. No idea. This was part of the article when I copy edited it, so I kept it out of benefit of the doubt. A Google search on the word "jugem" gets a ton of .jp and .cc results, but none is in English.
- 2. The name is used for the character and the race. The manuals tend to treat Lakitu as a single character rather than a race. For example, from the Super Mario Bros. instruction manual: "The mysterious turtle who controls the clouds. He chases after Mario and drops Spiny's eggs on top of him." From the Super Mario Kart manual: "Hi, everybody! Thanks for dropping by the Super Mario Kart race track. My name is Lakitu, I run this track. If you need my help, I'll be around." And from the Mario Tennis manual: "Lakitu is the Chair Umpire (high above the court) and score keeper for all of the matches. There is no complaining about line calls allowed with this judge!" So the name belongs to a single Lakitu and to a whole race of them.
- 3. I've never heard the name pronounced in any of the games. I tend to use "luh-KEE-two." BrianSmithson 5 July 2005 01:40 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm just a guest and I usually don't write on discussion pages but someone put that Lakitu is "f'in annoying" in the first paragraph. I think that someone should fix that.
- 1. I removed this line because, as a Japanese student, I can assure you that it made no sense.
- 2. Thanks for the info. Sounds fine t' me.
- 3. Makes me wonder if there is a true pronunciation. ^_^
- I just did a fairly thorough edit of the article. Let me know what you think.
- — J44xm July 5, 2005 07:19 (UTC)
- It looks good. The name in Japanese may have something to do with this jugemu, but I fail to see how exactly. Does "Jugemu" mean anything in Japaense aside from being the name of the character in the story I linked to? BrianSmithson 5 July 2005 12:48 (UTC)
- That's a pretty interesting find, there. I looked up jugemu at WWWJDIC and it doesn't seem to mean anything whatsoever. Perhaps it's worthy of at least a mention in the article, or should we omit it, do you think? -- J44xm July 5, 2005 17:55 (UTC)
Appearances
[edit]Near the end of this first paragraph in this section, the latest appearance of lakitu should be super Mario oddessy or something laters, but definitely not smg 2. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Epmtunes (talk • contribs) 01:50, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Jugem's Cloud
[edit]A Link to the Past added this line to the Jugem's Cloud paragraph: "Ever since, the Jugem's Cloud's name was changed." I'm not sure what this means. What was the name changed to? I've never heard the cloud called anything except "Jugem's Cloud" in SMB3. BrianSmithson 21:40, 9 July 2005 (UTC)
- Maybe I should rephrase; I meant to say "Ever since Super Mario Bros. 3, the name Jugem's Cloud has never been used." Could you make that change for me? Thanks. -- A Link to the Past 08:25, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Hey, I was wondering; does Super Mario Advance 4 refer to it as Jugem's Cloud? -- A Link to the Past 18:49, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
Recent cuts to article
[edit]A Link to the Past deleted a bunch of stuff, some of it related to the peer review, much of it not. I replaced most of it, and here are my justifications:
- In general, action verbs make for stronger prose than "-ing" forms of the verbs. That's why I prefer "rides on a cloud and throws . . . " to "rides on a cloud, throwing . . . ", etc.
- 'Kay.
- As I wrote on Peer Review, I think it's important to keep the definition of "Spiny" in the article. I've moved it a bit, so hopefully the section reads more smoothly.
- 'Kay.
- I replaced the discussion of different projectiles used in Yoshi's Story, barring justification for its deletion.
- I was going to move that somewhere else, and pack it in with a paragraph or two on the Yoshi games (such as the Lakitus mentioned in YI and the Thunder Lakitus).
- I guess that might work. I was trying to avoid a "Then in this game, Lakitu could do this" approach, though. Let me see what you had in mind, I guess.
- I moved the stuff about the projectiles in the Yoshi games back under the "Variants" section, and I moved or deleted references to variant Lakitu that are already discussed under "Variants". I don't think it's worth talking about that stuff twice, and "Variants" seems the logical place for it, in my opinion. BrianSmithson 21:38, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

- I was going to move that somewhere else, and pack it in with a paragraph or two on the Yoshi games (such as the Lakitus mentioned in YI and the Thunder Lakitus).
- The word "power up" when used in the article is a compound adjective and should thus be hyphenated.
- 'Kay.
- Discussions of game plots and gameplay should be in present tense. This reflects the fact that the game takes place in the here and now each time it is played. (Technically speaking, this is called "literary present tense".)
- 'Kay.
- The section that began with "Lakitus have been known to carry a plethora of items on their fishing poles . . . " repeated a lot of information from earlier in the same paragraph. I kept the new information.
- 'Kay.
- I'm not married to the idea of keeping both of the Mario Kart images, but until an argument is made for doing so, I put them back in.
- The extra image is unnecessary; we don't need to give every visual aid we can.
- I agree, but here I was trying to illustrate two of Lakitu's MK functions. This was before the SMB cartoon-show and the Fishin' Lakitu images got added, though, so I agree that killing one of the MK pics is probably a good idea.
- The extra image is unnecessary; we don't need to give every visual aid we can.
- I replaced the section on "Named Lakitu". This is the sort of section that gets added to a lot of articles like this that are vulnerable to fancruft. I'd like to nip fancruft in the bud by having the section be well written rather than what you find on most game- and anime-related articles.
- Why is it still there? Other than the Lakitu Twins, the characters on the list are already in the article.
- I put it back because I'd like to head this off at the pass. I mean that some point in the future, some fan somewhere is probably going to add such a list to the article. My thinking is that if it is added early, we can ensure that it is well written. It also will allow people to talk about any new Lakitu characters that pop up in the future without having to put the information in some random place in the article. Finally, it gives people a place to add the inevitable details about the Lakitu Brothers' attack pattern and Lakilulu's favorite kind of bubblegum. Okay, I'm exaggerating. I lean toward keeping the section, but if others want it gone, I won't cry. BrianSmithson 23:52, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
- Why is it still there? Other than the Lakitu Twins, the characters on the list are already in the article.
- Watch the plural of "Lakitu". Some of the new additions used "Lakitus". At any rate, we should be consistent.
- 'Kay.
I want to emphasize that I am not trying to impose my will on the article (at least not too much :). I just want to hear arguments for why some things were changed, and to provide arguments for why I think they shouldn't have been. Happy editing! BrianSmithson 12:09, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
- 'Kay.
Lead
[edit]I restored some of a cut paragraph from the lead. According to Wikipedia:Summary style, the lead should cover what the rest of the article covers, and a great deal of the article is taken up with discussions of Lakitu's roles in various games and enemy vs. neutral vs friendly Lakitu. I hope the present version is a nice compromise.
On an unrelated note, I delinked turtle in the lead. I know someone said it should be linked to in the peer review, but visiting the turtle article will add nothing to the reader's appreciation of the subject at hand. Y'all can relink it if you wish, but it's overlinking in my opinion. Lots of luck on this one. FAC has become decidedly anti-video game lately. BrianSmithson 11:46, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
Ted Barrows
[edit]I just removed this bit: The idea of Lakitu came from the worldwide known Nintendo designer who came up with Mario Bros. and many other Nintendo characters name Ted Barrows. If that's true, it's certainly worth including. But sans source, it stays deleted. — BrianSmithson 19:37, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Charicature?
[edit]I think I recall reading somewhere that Lakitu is modeled after one of the creators of Mario Bros. Has anyone else heard that? --66.229.183.101 01:57, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]Um. This is a Featured Article. You can't just merge it into Mario series enemies and expect no one to notice. — BrianSmithson 22:21, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Fluffy
[edit]I removed this:
- In the Super Mario Bros. comic book, Lakitu is seen to talk to his cloud (which responds) and refer to it as 'Fluffy'.
It was from an anonymous user and smells of vandalism. Can anyone verify this? — BrianSmithson 02:04, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Koopa Troopa?
[edit]The article says that Lakitu is a Koopa Troopa. He always stuck me as more of a spiny, due to his smaller size. Also, even if he is a Koopa Troopa, he would be a Koopa, not a Koopa Troopa. Koopas are just the species, and Koopa Troopas are Koopas that have joined Bowser's army. Not all Lakitus are in Bowser's army, so this would be innacurate. RememberMe? 23:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
- Aren't Spinys a type of Koopa? I had originally called him a Koopa, but someone changed it to "Koopa Troopa". It should probably be changed back. — BrianSmithson 04:05, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Out-of-universe info
[edit]Is there anything at all to say about Lakitu that isn't sourced directly to observation of the games themselves? This article is currently sourced to the games, the manuals, and a self-published and somewhat dubious fansite. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 22:46, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe in Japanese somewhere, but my guess is probably not. — BrianSmithson 22:49, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Just searched both Google Scholar and Google Books for both Lakitu and Jugemu. The only reference I found (aside from Prima strategy guides) was a Google Scholar link to an article discussing the camera in Mario 64. — BrianSmithson 22:53, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- This is troubling. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 22:55, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, this article was an important step in the formulation of what eventually became WP:WAF, but it's showing its age. The standard for fictional character articles has gotten higher. If someone wants to file a WP:FAR request, I won't cry about it. — BrianSmithson 07:56, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Reformat
[edit]I've reverted the reformat. It wasn't very logical, talking about the character's secondary roles before talking about its primary roles. The current format discusses Lakitu as an enemy character in Mario Bros. games (it's primary role) and then discusses Lakitu in sports games, other media, etc. Also, terse headers are to be preferred to longer ones, so I don't see why the "In" at the front of each is necessary. I've kept the section stub on concept and creation; it's a needed element that the article lacks. — BrianSmithson 04:52, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Althogh Lakitu is sitting on Fluffy, but I don't get it. Lakitu is a minion in Mario Party 9, but also plays as a host in Mario Super Sluggers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.181.19.160 (talk) 06:25, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Name
[edit]Where does the American name Lakitu come from? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, since it sounds MORE foreign than Jugem.
- Quite probably the creator of the names Lakitu, Koopa, Podoboo, and so on (be it Miyamoto or someone else) will go down to his grave never explaining the meanings of the names. Maybe there literally is no meaning at all. —Soap— 04:11, 22 June 2015 (UTC) (I didnt use Goomba because it's widely assumed it comes from wikt:goomba, although that still leaves the Japanese form, Kuribō, a mystery. —Soap— )
- The name Kuribo's no mystery, kuri is chestnut and little round guys get 'bo' on their name. Koopa was just reassigned from the big guy to the little guys. You're right though, it's probably a lost mystery. Game translators were not exactly a big deal at the time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.72.206.153 (talk) 02:16, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
Concept and Creation
[edit]Why is there a heading named concept and creation when there is no information on it, as of yet? It makes the article look messy, expecially the stub warning. I suggest we remove it until more information is found, at which time it can be returned. pirkid 15:02, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
- The reason is because the article desperately needs such information if it is to adhere to our manual of style on fictional elements and if it is to be comprehensive. The article was once a featured article, but it lost that status due to lack of information on the character's background. The section is needed; hopefully someone seeing the stub warning will fill in the blanks for us. — Brian (talk) 22:16, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Koopa Merger
[edit]Lakatu should be merged with the Koopa page. He's not important enough have his own, as he is only a minor enemy.
- I think Lakitu is notable enough. 94.172.114.173 (talk) 11:46, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
Gender
[edit]I don't really mind if Lakitu is a 'he' or an 'it', but the pronouns in this article frequently change stance mid-sentence! The result is often very confusing.
I'd clean it up one way (leaning towards male) but I don't know which would be preferred - would anyone like to decide this? 94.172.114.173 (talk) 11:46, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
I'm in favour of 'he' instead of 'it'. Liquidmetalrob (talk) 19:31, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

- I'm sorry, I should have explained. You replaced fictional with flying, but fictional needs to remain in the lede so it's clear the character is not real... I have re-added it. Sro23 (talk) 18:16, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
