Leiji v Reiji[edit]

Why is his name pronounced "Leiji" in English? There is no "L" sound in Japanese, and his name is pronounced "Reiji" (I realize the Japanese "r" isn't like the English "r") in Japanese. Absolute none sense. In general, most "R" sounds in Japanese are moire like "R" and a little like english "L". The correct name spelling in English should be Reiji But as the Reiji Matsumoto himself prefers Leiji, and it has remained so throught the world (including his official website) Leiji should be the spelling in English.--85.130.69.81 14:19, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it depends on the dialect. Some Japanese use a very strong L, some use a strong R, & some use a rl sound that most English speaking people can't reproduce. Those who don't watch subtitled Japanese anime/movies or listen to Japanese music are ignorant of this fact. This is a wrong concept still--there is an L in Japanese just like there is an l, but the thing is that they SOUND THE SAME. They don't have different characters. The sound would be like "rl"eiji, not "reiji" or "leiji". Just like we can't tell the difference between run1 and run3 in mandarin, the Japanese can't tell the difference between an l and an r because the sounds have blended together. If you listen to Japanese the sounds are the same. (kind of like a flat Spanish r the tongue is litterally positioned between the front dental of the l and the back velar of the r.). Therefore he can argue for an l or r in romaji and it often happens that way when romanizing because literally there is no difference because in Japanese it's the same sound. Most of the phonetic subtleties enounced here about the slightly hybrid amalgamate of Japanese R and L are of course correct. But the phonetic theory is one thing and conventional and established spelling is another. Even admitting that the venerate manga artist himself seems to have created this spelling - for anyone knowledgeable of Japanese romanisation the writing Leiji looks like an utterly grotesk monstrosity. - After all. IPA for most English sounds or IPA for the sounds of any other language looks also very different from the conventional writing. But no one would like to write IPA in ordinary life.

Same Universe[edit]

The fact that the various work of Matsumoto shares a same narrative universe is not completely true.

The list of "continuity errors" in his body of work would make go crazy any fan of the aforementioned continuity, as he famously does not care about the coherence between different stories.

He cares more that each story be entertaining on her own, and not that the Harlock of 2002 is in contradiction with that of 1978.

What is true is that some of his work share some characters, however they change slightly characterization at every new appearance (they are more like the Osamu Tezuka "Star System", than a Marvel or DC cast), and that its design has been kept very coherent along the years (and, to modern eyes, is nowadays quite anachronistic, with all those dials in starships supposedly from the year 29xx ). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.152.134.94 (talk) 21:15, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Organizing list of works[edit]

I can't see any apparent order to this. Should we arrange his works alphabetically or chronlogically? I am particularly interested in this so-called Adventures of a Honeybee that Captain Harlock supposedly appeared first in 1953, since Leiji would have only been 15 years old if that was the case.
