Inclusion criteria
  1. All songs appearing on an officially-released album (as determined by inclusion on Template:The Beatles albums), except the instrumental recordings written or arranged by George Martin primarily for film (such as those released on A Hard Day's Night and Yellow Submarine), shall be included on the list.
  2. A song which does not meet criterion 1 shall be included on the list, accompanied by appropriate citations, only if it was recorded between 1960 and 1970, inclusive, or between 1994 and 1996, inclusive, and satisfies one of the following requirements:
    • The song was recorded during official studio time.
    • The song was recorded as a demo intended for development into an official release by the Beatles, provided two or more members of the Beatles appear on the recording.
    • The song was recorded as a demo intended for development into an official release by another artist, provided two or more members of the Beatles appear on the recording.
  3. No recording of the Quarrymen or of the individual solo members of the Beatles shall be considered for inclusion on the list unless such a recording meets criterion 1.
  4. A recording where two or more members of the Beatles appear in an endeavor separate from the band itself shall be noted in a separate section of the article.
  5. The inclusion of any other song on the list shall be accompanied by appropriate citations and shall be justified on the talk page for the list.

Criteria for inclusion on the list[edit]

The edits wars from the last few days make it clear that there should be some ground rules set for whether a song should be included on this list. Here is my attempt at formalizing the criteria for inclusion on this list:

  • All songs on the list must have been recorded between 1960 and 1970, inclusive, or between 1994 and 1996, inclusive.
  • All songs appearing on officially-released albums (as determined by inclusion on Template:The Beatles albums), except the instrumental recordings written or arranged by George Martin primarily for film (such as those released on A Hard Day's Night and Yellow Submarine), shall be included on the list.
  • Any song recorded during official studio time, but not officially released, shall be included on the list, accompanied by appropriate citations.
  • Any song recorded as a demo intended for development into an official release by the band, but later rejected, shall be included on the list, accompanied by appropriate citations, provided two or more members of the band appear on the recording.
  • Any song recorded as a demo intended for development into an official release by another artist shall be included on the list, accompanied by appropriate citations, provided two or more members of the band appear on the recording.
  • Recordings of the Quarrymen or the individual solo members of the Beatles shall not be considered for inclusion on this list.
  • Recordings where two or more members of the band appear in an endeavor separate from the band itself shall be noted in a separate section of the article.
  • The inclusion of any other recording on this list shall be accompanied by appropriate citations and shall be justified on this talk page.

How does that sound? Gordon P. Hemsley 22:32, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Sounds sensible to me. GabeMc (talk|contribs) 23:25, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
I've created Talk:List of songs recorded by the Beatles/Inclusion criteria to maintain the criteria in a less transient way. (Discussion should still continue here.) Gordon P. Hemsley 06:19, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
I've changed the wording (but not the spirit) of the criteria compared to what is listed here; please check again to ensure that they continue to sound sensible to you. Gordon P. Hemsley 06:59, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Recent revert war[edit]

  • Well, crap. I just blocked an editor indef, and semi'd the page, based on assertions by long-time contributors that this information was false, and that it was being reverted by multiple editors. Are you telling me that this isn't, false, but a content dispute? --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:41, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
No, the content added by the IP edit warrior and re-added via revert by BPB was intentionally false. GabeMc (talk|contribs) 23:44, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
I've asked for feedback at WP:BEATLES. Not because I think all that material might belong here - I trust your judgement and GPH's judgement on that - but because I don't want to call something "vandalism" and block accordingly if there's another way to look at it. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:59, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
I don't mean to suggest that all additions to the page were true (though some of them likely were). A few of the points in my criteria above specifically emphasize the need for citations specifically because such unreleased or demo recordings are diminishingly hard to verify. There are numerous bootleg recordings in existence that are passed off as the Beatles when in fact they are impersonators or are otherwise mislabeled. With that said, I do believe there are sockpuppets popping up for this mundane issue, and it is not out of the realm of reason to protect the page and block repeat reverters. Gordon P. Hemsley 04:28, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
Thank you both for the explanation. I've semi'd it for 3 months. If this person continues to disrupt any more Beatles articles, please let me know. --Floquenbeam (talk) 00:41, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
You are most welcome Thank you for protecting the project. I assume this latest round of nonsense is related to the extensive vandal/trolling activities of User:99.251.125.65. GabeMc (talk|contribs) 00:45, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I can't tell whether the criteria are perfect or not, but they're very reasonable. But if those are the criteria, then filling the column "Album" should be mandatory and that cannot be left as blank. The column should included the album and, in the less obvious cases, the reasons for the inclusion. Currently there 36 songs without any album indication, so we cannot determine, just to mention one, why Shakin' in the Sixties, is in the list while are left out dozens of other songs (including some Lennon-McCartney's) which were performed and recorded by the band in the so called "Get Back/Let It Be Sessions" [1] and then left unrealased in the official albums. Another thing that should be considered the few songs who were certainly recorded during the relevant timeframe, but the tapes are now absolutely unavailable, being destroyed or so. This is the case of Summertime, which has been recorded on October 15th, 1960 [2]. Euforbio (talk) 14:05, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Edit request on 3 January 2013[edit]

I wish to add only two songs that I think belong on here: Circles, from 1969 lead and writer both Harrison Hot as the Sun, also from 1969 lead and writer both McCartney

That is all I wish

Not done: This page is no longer protected. Subject to consensus, you should be able to edit it yourself. — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 14:36, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Spelling Error[edit]

In the section for My Bonnie, "Sheridan" is spelt incorrectly twice, in reference to Tony Sheridan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Erinchilada (talkcontribs)

Done, thank you. --Floquenbeam (talk) 01:49, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

The lead singer for 'Woman' is incorrect.[edit]

On this list it states that Paul McCartney is the vocalist for Woman. Actually, this song is sung by John Lennon and he recorded it as a solo artist.108.236.108.51 (talk) 22:57, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Same title, different song. Woman (the McCartney song) was written primarily for Peter and Gordon, and released by them in 1966. It can be found here Grutness...wha? 13:23, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Christmas[edit]

I note that this page is, perhaps understandably, strictly controlled, so I'll ask here rather than being bold - is there any reason why Christmas Time Is Here Again is listed but the likes of Everywhere It's Christmas are not? Grutness...wha? 13:14, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Songs by Tony Sheridan and The Beatles[edit]

I'm a Beatles fan and I'd like to ask you why only "My Bonnie" and "The Saints" by Tony Sheridan and The Beatles are listed.

I think the following 4 songs should be added, since they were recorded in the same sessions of "My Bonnie" and "The Saints" (and other songs without Sheridan such as "Ain't She Sweet" or "Cry for a Shadow"):

  • "Sweet Georgia Brown" (Bernie, Casey, Pinkard)
  • "Why" (Compton/Sheridan)
  • "Nobody's Child" (traditional)
  • "Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby" (Hall/Singleton), aka "If You Love Me, Baby"

All of them were released several times, for example in compilations such as: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Early_Tapes_of_the_Beatles or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles%27_First or as singles (or B-sides).

For example, it's strange to see that "Ain't She Sweet" is listed but not "Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby" (Hall/Singleton) (aka "If You Love Me, Baby") since they were released together as a single in 1964 (please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles_discography).

I know that the previous 4 songs haven't been released in Anthology 1, but I think that they still should be included following point 2 of the Inclusion Criteria.

Chart positions[edit]

Is having chart positions on this page really necessary? I think that would be more appropriate for their discography list rather than this list. There should also be references for each song. BeatlesLedTV (talk) 03:42, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
