I have reverted the addition of a year of birth that was unsourced in the article. The accompanying edit summary said, "Her birthdate is well known and published at IMDB".
Let me mention two significant points:
Even if the "birthdate is well known" it still needs a citation in the article to indicate a reliable, published, non-primary source.
Melanie Mayron was born October 20, 1952. I know her personally. Her birthday is very easy to find and corroborate. On a related note, I'm not sure why IMDb is considered such a poor source by you, personally. I don't recall ever seeing anyone else take as much issue with it. Perhaps others do have the same issue with IMDb as you do, but I don't recall running across any of them before. I'm wondering if an example of its "unreliability" can be provided? Thank you for your reply, @Kubrickrules. I will address each item that you raised.
Any person's date of birth needs a citation, according to Wikipedia's basic principle of citing sources (Wikipedia:Citing sources). When that person is living, WP:BLPPRIVACY also requires a citation for his or her date of birth. Even when an editor has personal knowledge of a date of birth, Wikipedia's Verifiability policy requires supporting that date with an inline citation to a reliable source (WP:BURDEN).
IMDb's lack of reliability is not a personal matter with me (any more than use of any other unreliable source). WP:IMDB gives a good summary related to that topic. You might also want to read WP:USERGENERATED, which lists a number of sources that are similarly unreliable because they are user-generated. You might use the talk page associated with one of those pages to ask about an example of its unreliablility.
You wrote, "Her birthday is very easy to find and corroborate." I encourage you to restore it, accompanied by a reliable, published, non-primary source. That would be a good addition to the article. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:03, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to what Eddie Blick said, you also can't just use whatever websites you find online that show a DOB without considering whether or not it's a reliable source. Many of them don't indicate where they got that info from and have the incorrect DOBs for other celebs. For all we know, these cites could be web scraping with no regard to the reliability or the accuracy of that content. Some celebs have never actually publicly disclosed their age or DOB and since many sites web scrape without doing any fact checking, they end up having falsified DOBs online. When it comes to WP:BLP the number of reliable sources is quite slim and there are only very few acceptable options. A truly reliable Secondary source(IE a magazine such as Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times or New York Times. And preferably multiple of these) reporting their exact DOB. Or a social media post from the subject themselves where he or she confirms his or her birthday and preferably either his or her age or YOB in the same post as well. Failing either any of these, that info should kept out of articles for the time being. Kcj5062 (talk) 12:27, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the time it took both of you to write your replies, the date of birth could have been sourced and updated by either one of you. Since it's not my article, I'll leave in your capable hands. Thank you for the information.Kubrickrules (talk) 14:04, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kubrickrules, It isn't any single editor's article. No article in Wikipedia belongs to any one person. The entire site is based on collaboration among editors. If you want to add content, you are welcome to do so, as long as the added content is properly cited. Eddie Blick (talk) 00:01, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
