European U23 records

[edit]

The article currently mentions Erdoğan's 2010 times over 10000m of 31:55.53 and 31:44.86 as being European U23 records. I'm not saying this isn't true, but it's a complete mystery to me exactly why it should be true. There are plenty of times by European athletes younger than 23 better than Erdoğan's; in fact, 31:44.86 is even inferior to the European junior (U20) record of 31:40.42. You can find the European all-time U23 list here; Erdoğan is 6th. This should be definitely noted in the article - unless it's simpler to just scrap the whole thing altogether. Indeed very confusing. Reliable sources [1][2][3] say she broke the record, however, another source, from which I am not sure whether reliable, says she ranks sixth at the U23 list of 10000m women's. Anyway, in order to bypass any dispute, I am going to delete the sentence about that.CeeGee (talk) 06:43, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think all those sources are right, in a way. Erdoğan is definitely 6th on the all-time list, but Petrova's 32:17.49 truly was (indeed still is) cited by European Athletic Association as the "record". It seems that in some events they go with the real records as records, and in others (such as this and men's 10000m) just pick a time at random...
Anyhow, the fact remains that Erdoğan is neither the fastest ever European U23 athlete over 10000m (Mert Girmalegesse is, though, on men's side - you seem to have worked on his article as well, could use this!) or the officially recognized "record" - 32:17.49 still is, as far as I can tell! - so yes, scrapping the whole thing is probably wisest.
