She attended Oklahoma S University for four years. Smith established herself as one of the top softball pitchers in the world during her time at OSU and as a U.S. Olympian.

A two-time, first-team All-American for the Cowgirls in 1988 and 1989, the southpaw led OSU to the Women's College World Series in '89 and was named to the WCWS All-Tournament Team.

She was an All-Big Eight Conference selection three times and was also named to the conference's all-tournament team three times, including winning tourney MVP honors in 1989.

During her four-year career in Stillwater, she tossed a school-record nine no-hitters, two of which were perfect games, and she ranks in the top 10 in OSU's season and career record books in 16 offensive and pitching categories. She owns the school record for wins with 82 ranks second with 46 shutouts and is tied for second in career triples.
