= Born in Virginia, so not from Africa -- why then "African American"?

[edit]

The beginning of this article strikes me as absurd: He is described as "African American", and then the next sentence states that he was born in Virginia. He is therefore Virginian, not African. Why then is he labeled as "African American", rather than simply "American"? As far as ethnicity is concerned, wouldn't it be more accurate at this point to use the word "black" (as analogous to "white"), since he is no more "African" than someone born in Kentucky is "German", "Irish", or "Italian"? -- Newagelink (talk) 18:49, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
