Update[edit]

Hi. I'd like to propose the addition of Suleyman's startup as well as his role with Greylock to the History section of the article as follows:

Suleyman left Google in January 2022 and joined Greylock Partners as a venture partner.[1] Also in 2022, he founded startup Inflection AI with Reid Hoffman and Karén Simonyan to develop human-computer communications software,[2] with initial funding of $225 million from various investors.[3] Greylock invested in the startup, stating plans to “incubate” the company as it did Workday, Inc. and Palo Alto Networks.[2]

Perhaps it would also be appropriate to update the lead as follows:

Mustafa Suleyman CBE (born August 1984) is the co-founder and former head of applied AI at DeepMind,[4] an artificial intelligence company acquired by Google and now owned by Alphabet.[5] He is also the co-founder of Inflection AI, a startup backed by Greylock Partners, among others.[2]

Thanks for your time MforSuleyman (talk) 18:37, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: Added a brief sentence on GP, but unsure as to the relevance of the rest. Feel free to resubmit for a second review. PK650 (talk) 04:40, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PK650 thanks for looking at my request and for adding the sentence about GP! I have reopened the request as you suggested, but was hoping you might have some insight into how I might better demonstrate the relevance of the rest? It seems to me a straightforward update to the history; Suleyman founded a company alongside a notable person, complete with a source. Happy to hear your thoughts. Thanks again, MforSuleyman (talk) 10:19, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure if the new company would be notable, @MforSuleyman. Andre🚐 16:37, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've added this which seems merited: "He is involved in a new AI lab venture with Reid Hoffman,[6] which raised $225 million.[7]" Andre🚐 00:11, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Andrevan, thanks so much for revisiting this. My understanding is that a company needs to be notable in order to merit its own article, but not necessarily in order to be included on an existing page. Of course, information on such a company would have to be backed by third party sources, which I provided. Thank you for adding what you thought was relevant to the page.
Might I suggest one small change, regardless of the startup's name- Mustafa is the co-founder of the company, so saying he "is involved in" is less accurate and offers the reader little context. I propose changing the sentence to read "Also in 2022, he co-founded a new AI lab venture with Reid Hoffman..." instead. Thanks again for your time, MforSuleyman (talk) 21:35, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Based on your reasonable argument I have added that he is the co-founder and the name of the company to the article. Andre🚐 21:41, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Andrevan, thanks so much for looking into this and for updating the article. I have some additional ideas, and will post them as a new edit request shortly. Will ping you then in case you have time to take a look. Thanks again, MforSuleyman (talk) 09:26, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy[edit]

Hi there. I'd like to propose amending the controversy language in the Career section as follows, to remove redundancy and excessive detail according to WP:WEIGHT and WP:BALASP:

"...On 21 August 2019, Bloomberg reported that Suleyman had been placed on administrative leave because of a controversy related to some of the projects he led,[1] though later reports revealed that he had been placed on leave following an investigation into allegations of bullying against him.[2] He led the development of Streams and the relationship with the Royal Free Hospital which was widely criticised and censured by the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for data protection breaches. An email circulated by DeepMind's leadership to staff after the story broke, and published by Business Insider, said Suleyman's "management style fell short" of expected standards.[3] Business Insider subsequently published further details of allegations of bullying against Suleyman, including claims he would boast about how he would "crush people", had a habit of "flying off the handle out of nowhere", and demanded employees carry out tasks unrelated to their jobs.[4] In December 2019, Suleyman announced he would be leaving DeepMind to join Google, working in a policy role.[5]

Suleyman left Google in January 2022 and joined Greylock Partners as a venture partner.[6] He co-founded a new AI lab venture with Reid Hoffman, known as Inflection AI[7] which raised $225 million.[8]"

I have made sure to include all references which are currently cited in the article, but have reorganized the information to fit into one chronological paragraph.

Pinging Andrevan and PK650 who reviewed my previous request in case they have any insight.

Thanks again, MforSuleyman (talk) 10:23, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I removed 1 statement that was unreferenced[1], I'm going to leave the rest for now since I'm not sure. There is likely an application of the WP:BLP policy for the bullying allegations, and I don't think Suleyman is a public figure, but on the other hand there seem to be plentiful sources discussing the alleged bullying, and we don't state affirmatively that he was a bully, just that they were allegations. Andre🚐 15:22, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Andrevan, thanks for looking into this request as well.
A few clarifications:
My proposed version lists the events in chronological order, and removes some of the less neutral narrative such as the word "however", which has a negative connotation. Regarding the bullying allegations- I suggested removing only the elaboration, not the allegations themselves; the sentence referencing the WSJ article was moved to the first sentence in my version, not removed completely (highlighted below). The language I do propose removing is: "including claims he would boast about how he would "crush people", had a habit of "flying off the handle out of nowhere", and demanded employees carry out tasks unrelated to their jobs." which seems like excessive detail, especially for a BLP.
I'm not sure if this helps, but here is the existing language with my edits layered on top for clarity:

On 21 August 2019, Bloomberg reported that Suleyman had been placed on administrative leave because of controversy related to some of the projects he led,[1] though later reports revealed that he had been placed on leave following an investigation into allegations of bullying against him.[2]

In 2021, however, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Suleyman had been placed on leave at DeepMind in 2019, following an investigation into employees' allegations of bullying against him.[3] An email circulated by DeepMind's leadership to staff after the story broke, and published by Business Insider, said Suleyman's "management style fell short" of expected standards.[4] Business Insider subsequently published further details of allegations of bullying against Suleyman. , including claims he would boast about how he would "crush people", had a habit of "flying off the handle out of nowhere", and demanded employees carry out tasks unrelated to their jobs.[5] In December 2019, Suleyman announced he would be leaving DeepMind to join Google, working in a policy role.[6]

Suleyman left Google in January 2022 and joined Greylock Partners as a venture partner.[7] He co-founded a new AI lab venture with Reid Hoffman, known as Inflection AI[8] which raised $225 million.[9]

Happy to discuss further as needed. Thanks again, MforSuleyman (talk) 23:56, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't do exactly what you requested but I trimmed some of the excessive detail and refactoring the order of the descriptions of the bullying allegations to come before leaving and his new venture. Andre🚐 00:24, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DeepMind investigation[edit]

Hello. I'd like to draw attention to the following paragraph in the "DeepMind partnerships" section:

"In 2017, the ICO concluded a year-long investigation that focused on how the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust tested the app, Streams, in late 2015 and 2016.[1] The ICO found that the Royal Free failed to comply with the Data Protection Act when it provided patient details to DeepMind, and found several shortcomings in how the data was handled, including that patients were not adequately informed that their data would be used as part of the test. DeepMind published its thoughts[2] on the investigation in July 2017, saying “we need to do better” and highlighting several activities and initiatives they had initiated for transparency, oversight and engagement. This included developing a patient and public involvement strategy[3] and being transparent in its partnerships."'

This does not appear to apply to Mustafa Suleyman at all, but instead to the company as a whole, and so would be more appropriate for inclusion in the DeepMind article. I ask that it be moved accordingly. It may make sense to combine the "DeepMind" section with the "DeepMind partnerships" section, as well- however you see fit.

I'd also like to ask that Suleyman's website be added to the infobox or as an external link: https://mustafa-suleyman.ai/

Pinging Andrevan once again, in case he has a moment to look into this.

Thanks, MforSuleyman (talk) 10:43, 21 September 2022 (UTC) MforSuleyman (talk) 10:43, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Andrevan, thanks for all of your help! I really appreciate it. Would it be possible to add Suleyman's website to the infobox as well? It's https://mustafa-suleyman.ai/
Thanks again. MforSuleyman (talk) 16:17, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure. I'm looking at Wikipedia:External_links#Links_normally_to_be_avoided and there seems to be a statement that personal web sites shouldn't be linked. I'm not sure if there is an exception for a self-published autobiographical site. If you can find the relevant policy on this I will consider adding it. Andre🚐 15:59, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Andrevan, looking at the guidelines you shared, I see that they begin with "Except for a link to an official page of the article's subject". When looking at the criteria for such a page I believe the website above does apply as an "official link", but will leave this to your judgment. Thanks again for all of your help. DeepMind section merge and Inflection[edit]

Hi, I have a few more suggestions for the article:

  • I may be missing some context on how the differentiation between the DeepMind section content and the DeepMind partnerships content was determined, but it seems that the article would be clearer without the split. I propose that the two sections be merged so that all of the information is organized under a simple "DeepMind" section header.
  • I suggest that the lead be updated to include Suleyman's more recent role as founder and CEO of Inflection AI
  • I also propose the addition of a new section following "Career" as follows:

Inflection AI

In March 2022, Suleyman launched Inflection AI with Reid Hoffman in Silicon Valley.[4] The company was founded with the goal of leveraging "AI to help humans 'talk' to computers," and recruited experts from Google and Meta, as reported by CNBC. Initial funding reached $225 million, according to an SEC filing.[5]

Thanks for your time.

P.S. Pinging Andrevan in case he has time to look over one last request. Thanks again. MforSuleyman (talk) 22:47, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I probably won't have time to look at this because I have a lot of work this week and then I'll be on vacation until December 1. But it doesn't look controversial and seems to be an improvement so if nobody gets to it before I get back, I will be happy to take a look. Andre🚐 23:21, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Andrevan, no problem at all. Thanks! MforSuleyman (talk) 09:42, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Structure and Pi[edit]

Hello again. Suleyman's Inflection AI has a new bot which has been discussed by several prominent publications. As such, I have a few suggestions for the structure of the article, as well as an addition:

  • The removal of the "Post DeepMind" subsection, splitting the current information into the "DeepMind" subsection and a new "Inflection AI" subsection as follows:

=== Post-DeepMind ===

In December 2019, Suleyman announced he would be leaving DeepMind to join Google, working in a policy role.[1] -move up to DeepMind subsection

Inflection AI[edit]

Suleyman left Google in January 2022 and joined Greylock Partners as a venture partner[2] and in March 2022, Suleyman co-founded Inflection AI, a new AI lab venture with Greylock's Reid Hoffman.[3] The company was founded with the goal of leveraging "AI to help humans 'talk' to computers," recruited former staff from companies such as Google and Meta[4] and raised $225 million in its first funding round.[5][6]

  • The addition of the following to the new DeepMind section:

In 2023, Inflection AI launched a chatbot named “Pi” for Personal Intelligence. The bot “remembers” past conversations and seems to get to know its users over time.[7] According to Suleyman, the long-term goal for Pi is to be a digital “Chief of Staff”, with the initial design focused on maintaining conversational dialogue with users, asking questions, and offering emotional support.[8][9]

  • Following this restructure, please move the paragraph focusing on Suleyuman's "management style" at DeepMind beginning at "In August 2019, Bloomberg reported that Suleyman had been placed on administrative leave..." from "Career" to the "DeepMind" subsection, in chronological order.

Pinging Andrevan who is already familiar with this article, in case he has time to look into this. I'd be happy to create a userspace draft or clarify further if anything was unclear. Thank you, MforSuleyman (talk) 14:20, 5 June 2023 (UTC) MforSuleyman (talk) 14:20, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@MforSuleyman Sure, as you requested on my talk page, I can process your edit request.

  1. What do you mean by "in the new DeepMind section", did you mean "in the new Inflection AI section"?
  2. Yes, please create a User Draft of the changes, that makes attribution easier to link to.

Rolf h nelson, thanks so much for your time. Would it be appropriate to trim the following DeepMind paragraph, which is a bit redundant, as follows? I've marked up the proposed changes for clarity:

In August 2019, Bloomberg reported that Suleyman had been was placed on administrative leave following controversy about him.[1][2] In 2021, the Wall Street Journal revealed that he had been placed on leave in 2019 following an investigation into employees' allegations of bullying as their manager.[3] The company hired an external lawyer to investigate the allegations before placing him on leave at the time, and shortly thereafter Suleyman left to take a VP role at parent company Google. An email circulated by DeepMind's leadership to staff after the story broke, as well as additional details published by Business Insider, said Suleyman's "management style fell short" of expected standards.[4][5]

Thank you again for your input, MforSuleyman (talk) 10:27, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No, the current content seems well-sourced. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 01:10, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rolf h nelson, thanks for looking into this. I made sure to include all of the existing sources in my revision, and only rewrote the sentences to summarize the events in an organized manner, as opposed to as they came out back in 2019, 2021, and 2019 again(?). Can you think of a better way to do this? Open to any suggestions you may have. MforSuleyman (talk) 23:17, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your proposed edit seems to remove the allegations of bullying, as well as the information that he had been placed on leave. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 01:56, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rolf h nelson, the proposed text includes the fact that he was placed on leave, but does remove the details about bullying. If you feel that that is needed instead of the current "controversy about him", what do you think of this revision instead?

In August 2019, Suleyman was placed on administrative leave following allegations of bullying employees.[6][7] The company hired an external lawyer to investigate, and shortly thereafter Suleyman left to take a VP role at parent company Google. An email circulated by DeepMind's leadership to staff after the story broke, as well as additional details published by Business Insider, said Suleyman's "management style fell short" of expected standards.[8][9]

Further Pi updates[edit]

Hello, I suggest that the following update be included in the Inflection AI subsection:

In June 2023 Suleyman raised $1.3 billion in new funding for Inflection AI from investors including Microsoft, Nvidia, Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates and Eric Schmidt. He also partnered with Microsoft for cloud computing and with Nvidia and CoreWeave, a service provider, to deploy what the company believes to be the largest AI cluster in the world, comprising 22,000 NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs.[10]
