A beautiful cricket ground[edit]

This ground is often considered to be beautiful in reliable sources. For example see:

Selvey, Mike; Marks, Vic; Bull, Andy; Wilson, Andy; Weaver, Paul; Ronay, Barney (January 2013). "The most beautiful cricket grounds in the world – in pictures". The Guardian.

"It is all a matter of perspective... Sit with your back to the river at Worcester and it is a mundane view: from the other side it is magnificent" (Mike Selvey).
"New Road, Worcester. Not terribly original, I know, ... The walk through town and across the river to the ground, the trees, the Cathedral, the lovely old white buildings - some of which survive, thank goodness. It’s blissful county cricket" (Andy Wilson)

There are many other sources that make claims about the ground here is one:

"The Worcester Civic Society, English Heritage, the Inland Waterways Association and the city’s advisory body on conservation areas all lodged objections, complaining the hotel’s “modern” and “simplistic” design is not in keeping with England’s most beautiful county cricket ground." (Maloney, Mike (17 July 2009). "Exciting cricket ground plans approved,". Worcester News.)

and another

"Worcestershire is a second home to me. There is always a spring in my step as I cross the bridge over the Severn at Worcester to arrive at New Road, the most beautiful cricket ground in the world" Sir Mervyn King, (ex Governor of the Bank of England, and patron of the club)[1].

and and just one more:

There must have been a drinks break or some break in play, because one of the commentators was in poetic mood, describing the idyllic scene in New Zealand. It felt more like Worcester on a gentle summer’s day, he thought, than a major test match between two countries.

The mention of Worcester launched the other commentator into a reverie. Memories of the place they regarded as the most beautiful cricket ground in the world, sitting between the cathedral and the Severn were exchanged, along with memories of cricketers who had graced the wicket there back in the 1960s" (A distant boundary by Ian Poulton (6 March 2008) ))

I think it would be a good idea to mention that it is considered to be a beautiful cricket ground. -- PBS (talk) 22:06, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New Road, WorcesterBlackfinch New Road – This is the new name which avoids the need to disambiguate it, even if the old name was possibly more common, see WP:NATURAL. Crouch, Swale (talk) 13:38, 22 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Very strong oppose - a dab is really not a major issue here and there is a general view on sports related articles that the use of sponsored names creates big issues - Sophia Gardens, for example, recently reverted to its historical name when the sponsorship deal with SWALEC ran out. In the case of New Road I honestly wouldn't have known it had an alternative name, so COMMON really doesn't apply as an argument for changing - I can't recall seeing the Blackfinch added at any point when I've read match reports from New Road, so COMMON is really an argument for keeping the name as it is. In addition WP:CRITERIA argues that we call articles the "name or description of the subject that someone familiar with, although not necessarily an expert in, the subject area will recognize" and "one that readers are likely to look or search for and that editors would naturally use to link to the article from other articles". In my view - as someone who follows County Cricket, New Road is exactly that. It's also consistent with the naming of other cricket grounds which are predominantly named with their traditional names and I would suggest that this discussion might be better off being had at the cricket project. • Oppose. We don't usually use sponsorship names for old-established sports grounds. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:36, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose sponsorships change and I don't see that this new name has gained WP:RECOGNIZEABILITY or is used in sources that much. Galobtter (pingó mió) 15:08, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as per the arguments above. But having "Blackfinch New Road" as a redirect to the current name would be fine. JH (talk page) 16:22, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, it looks like this isn't a good move, I'd point out that WP:NATURAL should generally only be used in situations where it is nearly as common as the usual name. In this case it looks live even if the proposed name is the official name, the disambiguated (current) name is clearer, even if it requires artificial disambiguation. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:35, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - compelling arguments for WP:COMMON. I wasn't even aware it had a sponsor name! StickyWicket (talk) 19:07, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
