Mansion?[edit]

If no one objects, I propose changing the word "mansion" to "large house". "Mansion" isn't mentioned in the citation (unless I missed it) and while I lived in the area (for many years) it was never referred to as such. Tony Holkham (talk) 11:52, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Important Wins table[edit]

Since he's an important golfing character I've created an "Important wins" section with extra data. The list is based on the HOF list (http://www.worldgolfhalloffame.org/peter-alliss/?tab=achievements). Note that this list includes a 1960 win in the Sprite Tournament which Alliss lost in a playoff. So my list has 20 entries not 21. I've included the Sprite win in the playoff table below the main table. Alliss's own website (http://www.peteralliss.co.uk/about.php) says "Between 1954 and 1969, he won 21 professional tournaments" which, presumably, also includes the Sprite win and also confuses the issue by mentioning 1954 and not 1952 on HOF site. Mind you, he says "September 1958" for his famous three european open wins when they were in October and his general track record on facts in decidedly dodgy. HOF site says "European tour wins" but this doesn't make much sense. Nigej (talk) 11:11, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

1949 Open[edit]

https://www.theopen.com/Heritage/PreviousOpens#!/1949/Royal-St-George's has Peter Alliss playing in 1949 and scoring 80-81=161 to miss the cut. This was actually his brother "Percy Alexander" (known as Alec/Alex). "The Majors of Golf" is correct. The Times has P.A.Alliss jun (Weston-super-mare) and since Alec was the pro at Weston it must be him. Nigej (talk) 11:54, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

List of important wins[edit]

See above - Important Wins table. This list is based on: http://www.worldgolfhalloffame.org/peter-alliss/?tab=achievements . However it has been corrected to remove the Sprite International (or Sprite Tournament) which he lost in a playoff (https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=X4RAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=qZsMAAAAIBAJ&pg=1785%2C3576398) and to change the name (which was EUROPEAN TOUR WINS). Since all his wins predate the European Tour the name makes no sense. European Curcuit makes sense with the exception of the Brazil Open which was not, I believe, on the European circuit. Death date, 5 or 6 December[edit]

I think we should come to a consensus on whether his death date was the 5 December or 6 December. The current claim is cited from Aol, Verizon Media as 5 December. However, what I personally think is likely a more reliable source in The Guardian's obituary for him gives his death date as 6 December, seen here - https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/dec/06/peter-alliss-obituary Helper201 (talk) 16:05, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Guardian is the outlier here. Most sources have the 5th (Saturday evening) European Tour, Scotsman, The Times, Sky Sports, Evening Standard, Telegraph, ITV, etc. _wjemather^{please leave a message...} 16:15, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that sources say that he died on "Saturday evening" seems to indicate the 5th. The "evening" could extend past midnight, I suppose, but it seems unlikely. Nigej (talk) 16:27, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that the death date of 5th was unsourced on Sunday, but I was unable to find a clear source with date of death at that time. On Monday morning I read the Guardian obit and changed the date of death in the article to 6th, to match that source. Associated Press went with 'Saturday evening', and I suspect many of the sources are derived from that. That seems to be the consensus of reliable sources for now.
