is there any data about its use in the treatment of acne? please dont hesitate to contact me at kemo@tough.com

There are no previous records of this plant being a acne treatment, however, it has been used as a natural Laxitive for many years, but due to its toxicity, it is a very risky Herbal Medicine

Cascara Sagrada

[edit]

Cascara Sagrada redirects to here, and yet the term "Cascara Sagrada" is not mentioned once in this article. Could someone please include this information? The Jade Knight 08:08, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cause of Neuropathy

[edit]

Under the topic of Peripheral Neuropathy there is a comment in the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy that Buckthorn is demyelinating.

Requested move

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Move to Rhamnus (genus). Cúchullain t/c 15:11, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BuckthornRhamnus – "buckthorn" is ambiguous and may refer to other genera within Rhamnaceae, e.g. Frangula, Hippophae, as well as outside it. Rhamnus is unambiguous and unique to a single genus. Wikipedia generally prefers Latin names for this reason. Darorcilmir (talk) 08:30, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Support this proposal seems to be in line with WP:FLORA. The current naming is confusing. —Noiratsi (talk) 09:07, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Support, as per above arguments. Also, this would allow us to separate Frangula from Rhamnus, in line with most modern sources and with commons.wikimedia. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 16:15, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
SUPPORT - scientific names offer precision where the vernacular common names only promote confusion. On a related note, I assume all the appropriate disambiguation for various uses of "buckthorn" will be addressed. --ColonelHenry (talk) 22:09, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - and happy to see this kind of clear encyclopaedic titling. In ictu oculi (talk) 14:32, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • oppose rhamnus is a disambiguation page, making the nominator's proposal incorrect, as it isn't unambiguous. It should be called Rhamnus (genus) instead -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 04:04, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. I'm here because a notice of this discussion was posted on the Wikiproject Classical Greece and Rome and WikiProject Greece talk pages as an Attic deme is one of the items listed on the disambiguation page Rhamnus, though as an alternate form redirect. It used to be common practice to use a Latinate transliteration and call this place Rhamnus, but it's now preferred practice to transcribe ancient Greek sites' names using the so-called "scientific" transliteration, so our Rhamnous—so named because of the many prickly bushes (rhamnos, whence this genus' Latin > Linnaean name) that grew there, apparently—is exactly where it should be. So I'm just saying that as a Hellenist, I don't think that the ancient site has a good claim to being the primary topic for Rhamnus, and if it fits policy (I have no idea) to have the current rhamnus go to Rhamnus (disambiguation) so that the plant can have the primary topic slot, so be it. That would be why we have dab hats.  davidiad { t } 04:38, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose – The name should be moved, but I agree with 65.92.180.137: Rhamnus itself appears to be ambiguous, so this won't really accomplish much; better to move it to the more clearly unambiguous Rhamnus (genus). Davidiad also has a good solution, but I prefer IP's suggestion. Hamamelis (talk) 05:50, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. After 65.92.180.137's notification here I'm also commenting. My view and origin is close to davidiad { t }'s but with some notes:
  • 1.As others have already said it's not really unambiguous so I'm of the opinion that ceteris paribus there should be no change-move.
  • 2.If on the other hand the change is to be mutatis mutandis, i.e. there is to be a disambiguation page, etymology sections, links within the article(s) to the homonymous articles, then ok SUPPORT to the primacy change as per davidiad.
  • 3.a)But for the change to be made we must also first consider what davidiad said but on the flip side, i.e. that Ramnus (the place) has been transliterated for ages with a "u", not an "ou".The latter might be etymologically more "correct" and less ambiguous (Ραμνοῦς -> Ramnous ; Ράμνος -> Ramnos -> Ramnus as per grecolatin noun declension group equivalence) but age old habits might be hard to change.Btw I myself despite being Greek, both a Hellen and a somewhat Hellenist, had heard of Ramnus but not of ramnus till now, i.e. I didn't know the etymology till know(my bad;thank you Davidiadan for this and thank you all for the chance to do it!).So I think that (many) other people have to be considered first on whether they feel ok with Ramnus linking primarily to the plant's article herein.
  • b)On a similar but not totally equivalent note, the English language and the English Wikipedia seem to have been spared the difference between marathon and Marathon... :) Thanatos|talk 10:49, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support – move to Rhamnus (genus). Sminthopsis84 (talk) 12:51, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Semi-support. If Rhamnus is but one kind of Buckthorn, then Rhamnus should be an article on the kind, and Buckthorn an article on the kinds. LCS check (talk) 20:32, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support – move to Rhamnus (genus) as above. buckthorn can list all plants known as buckthorns. Casliber (talk · contribs) 06:21, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
