Born on the 4th of July comment

[edit]

The following comment was removed because it had no real relevancy to Kovic's basic biography and is only a claim and not fact:

Ron Kovic claims he was spat on by a Republican delegate after disrupting President Richard M. Nixon's acceptance speech at the 1972 Republican National Convention. (Born on the Fourth of July, p. 181.)

If this act was even a fact it only appears as a partisan attack on some unknown person at a political convention to which he was not even invited. Even if it were fact, it's an arbitrary comment that lacks cohesion to the rest of the article. Jtpaladin 00:43, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My grandfather was in the vietnam war and when he returned home, he was spat on. Draft?

[edit]

It's probably relevant that Ron Kovic volunteered and now believes that military recruiters were, and are, behaving deceptively. http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/86654/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jcarnelian (talkcontribs) 18:39, 26 June 2008 (UTC) Since when is peace partisan? I would call that self-condemnation. You said it, not me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.172.192.254 (talk) 11:46, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is Kovic actually Ković (english: Kovich)?

[edit]

Does anyone know? Did he ever talked about it? I just watched the movie and I am wondering what is the origin of his surname, it sounds to me like typical Croatian surname misspelled like most Croatian surnamed do in English. --Factanista 00:12, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Croatian name Ković is actually of Hungarian origin, Kovács, which means blacksmith. Mazarin07 (talk) 00:03, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Actually there is no Hungarian link, stop stealing our people. His father was born Eli Kovacevic to immigrant Croatian parents. His father's mother was from Croatia too Anna Delivuk

Removed line on soviet invasion of afghanistan

[edit]

I removed the line: "Curiously enough he has never protested the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan." Since it didn't fit within the flow of the article, had no relevance (the paragraph was discussing his involvement in the Iraq war, and the article doesn't discuss ALL of his anti ware protests so the sentence is out of place), and doesn't offer any useful information-- IE, did he support the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, did he oppose it but not speak out, did he not care, etc.

He never said boo either when Kosovo was bombed! Where was he then??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by ChevyNazi (talkcontribs) 16:47, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Peace-work or 'propaganda'?. While women and men who have struggled for peace win our respect. Involvement in the complex Israeli/Palestinian dispute is often a 'Hazy' distininction line in which Propaganda and Peace are difficult to distinguish, is Kovics' campaigning for Palestinians Peace Work or Propaganda?Johnwrd (talk) 01:49, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1976 Democratic Convention speech

[edit]

Is a transcript of his speech at the 1976 Democratic Convention available anywhere? Badagnani (talk) 21:24, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And see also - S. Brian Willson

[edit]

Wouldn't you think it might help if a few words were added after this link?
S. Brian Willson is not mentioned anywhere else in the article.77.125.129.33 (talk) 06:02, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update needed re: Gaza convoy

[edit]

Article states, "Kovic will co-lead with Mr.Galloway a humanitarian relief convoy to the Gaza Strip in early July, 2009." July 2009 has come and gone. This needs updated with whether the convoy took place and the results. Don't Be Evil (talk) 14:44, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A check of News Providers such as OpEdNews.com and NEWS.cn suggest the convoy did proceed to Gaza, arriving July 11th. Whether Mr Kovic actually travelled with the Convoy is not commented on. Mr George Galloway is reported as arriving at the Egyptian boarder with the Convoy.Johnwrd (talk) 04:25, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV Tag

[edit]

Does anyone know why there is a NPOV tag on this article? Poyani (talk) 19:18, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The user who placed it gave no reason. I have removed it. Use of such tags is explained at Template:POV. William Avery (talk) 13:03, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bruce Springsteen Song

[edit]
Bruce Springsteen wrote the song "Shut Out the Light" after reading Kovic's memoir...

Are you sure it was "Shut Out the Light"? Intuitively, it would be his much more famous "Born on the Fourth of July."
Dick Kimball (talk) 12:12, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. Maybe "Born to Run" or "Born in the U.S.A.", but Springsteen has no such song titled "Born on the Fourth of July". I'll add this citation as a source for the connection to "Shut Out the Light", which in fact is a B-side for "Born in the U.S.A." Hoof Hearted (talk) 18:35, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
