I think it would be a stronger article if you elaborated more on how society needs technology in order to grow and advance. because you talked about how technology has advanced in our society but not how technology has effected society as a whole. this needs rethought

you created a new article and now you are trying to merge old articles with entirely separate foundations into this article. there is a project of people working on the sts related articles already. those articles relate strongly to this article, that is true, but this article cannot expand to hold all of that information, which stands in relation to the other articles as well as itself. if you want to keep working on this article as a supplement to the technology article, i see that as a great idea, however, importing all of sts into this article, even those parts which are only clearly technology studies, decontextualizes it from the rest of the field and its related academic fields. your article is for, i think, a different audience also and one article can't cover everything for all the audiences.--Buridan 01:56, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

first you tried to merge in STS, then you without warning merged in social shaping of technology. i'd say that is an indicator. in any case, even if you are not, i think your perspective doesn't recognize that sst and your merge is very problematic for those entering into sst for the first time.--Buridan 14:16, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I am not sure about the "different audience" comment. What does that mean? I will tell you that this article is a general overview of how technology (and science) impact society and vice-versa. It is therefore a general article about this relationship. This article cannot cover every aspect of this huge field of study, but it will require a general introduction to all tech and soc topics. you have put the content under 'control' which is not what social shaping of technology is. you would probably lump the social construction of technology with the social shaping of technology even though within the field of sts they are known as different traditions that overlap. --Buridan 14:14, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Science, Technology and Society is a distinct interdisciplinary field. The notion that it should be merged into a separate string of loosely connected verbiage on the subject of "technology and society" does a disservice to that field. Numerous universities have established programs in STS, not in Technology and Society. Conferences, publications, and scholars self-identify as STS, not as Technology and Society. The label Technology and Society chops off "science," which may or may not have anything to do with "Technology." Fields cognate to STS include some such as archaeology and anthropology which on the face of it don't seem to fit well with the "Technology and Society" label, sans the Science. In summary, the merge and redirect seems to have happened without a vote, without taking into account the extant literature and what is happening in the world in the STS field.

Talking about prehistoric technology is distracting because it is not very relevant to the scope of today's technology and its impact on society. This article doesn't get to the point and is too long to be informative. There are also so grammatical mistakes such as where periods go and spacing in the second sub section of "Modern effects and examples." The funding section is too short and not necessary. Most of the other information is up to date and relevant. 

The article is neutral and unbiased. The funding part is underrepresented. It is not important but there are few short sentences about it. Either elaborate more on it or cut it out entirely. There are a lot of sources but they all seem to check out and be legitimate.The information comes from other Wikipedia articles and is unbiased. These seem to be reliable sources. It seems to me that the author is trying to merge older articles and make their own instead of original ideas. Execution and ritualistic suicide have existed for centuries, euthanasia has never been beyond humanity' ability, and abortion has existed, in some form, for centuries. The factual accuracy of these claims can be disputed. A simple look at there pages will verify my claim. In fact, this entire section is weak, and not encyclopedic. Technology as Legislation

I feel that it could be helpful to have a section that describes more explicitly how technology has such a great impact on society that it has almost become like legislation. This section could be called "Technology as Legislation" and could be put up near modern examples and would serve as an easily understood explanation/introduction of technology's impact on society. -- Toadstooliv

Technology

Prehistorically, technological changes have always prompted worry. For example, the invention of the written word and the telephone has significantly changed our lives, and the way we live. But the heavily technology based world we’re creating may be causing harmful habits or worse, stunting early development by exposing our children to technology too early, and too often. The year of 1982 the use of technology began to escalate, but much, much earlier before that, the book Catching Fire by Richard Wrangham theorized that the invention of fire and learning how to use fire to cook was the turning point, and our true beginning of our relationship with technology. But the introduction of technology hurts the deep prehistoric part of us in several ways. One of the most obvious ones is that we no longer have to communicate in person. We can say things from far away, and not even have to see the other person’s face - or even hear their voice. Body language and tone are just two things we miss out on by communicating through a screen. Computers and the internet are the biggest and most overpowering piece of technology the world has seen thus far. Most of the advertising we see are from ads on the computer from different webpages. And computers are now made so they can fit in the palm of our hand, so we can be attached to them wherever we go. Smartphones have taken us over. Our lives exist primarily on the internet now, with Youtube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as just a few of the networks that display our lives for everyone to see on the internet. The implementation of technology influences the values of a society by changing expectations and realities. The implementation of technology is also influenced by values. The internet causes ‘distraction to be the norm’. Technology isn’t entirely a bad thing though. Technology enables greater knowledge of international issues, values, and cultures. Due mostly to mass transportation and mass media, the world seems to be a much smaller place. I would agree that a section needs to be added to this article that discusses the modern innovations of technology in the past 20 years. There should be an extended discussion of how personal computers, mobile devices, the internet, and the world wide web have impacted society significantly. Any discussion of technology and society needs to cover the introduction of the iPhone, which revolutionized the way individuals and society did everything from communicating, creating, and collaborating with others on a global scale. For the continues desire of wanting better quality in sound, signal and images, cell phones are now better than ever. It includes every thing a person can think of featuring from blogging, recording and uploading to browsing the Internet. As a result, iTunes store have reached five billion songs and 1.5 billion iPhone downloads in 2009. Notably, cell phones have been developed to become a mini computer including high-resolution user interface, digital images and video cameras, memory storage, pre-installed keyboard and applications, and even more applications that could be downloaded by the user. Recording videos and audios are becoming nearly close to DVD quality on cell phones. This feature made it simpler for people to record important events and interviews. Moreover, they could share them online with the society by various video-sharing sites, such as YouTube. Additionally, most cell phones have a built in GPS and that would allow them to locate events on Google Maps and more. Modern technologies have made instructive information for classrooms and home assignments easier and simpler. It provides children, who have difficulties in learning the traditional way, with educational games that would help them in the process of learning. Alternatively from attending classes, online courses are offered to college students in advantage. The progress of the innovation of technology is continuing to improve the education sector for coming generations. Students today are called ‘screenagers’, ‘digital natives’ or ‘digital kids’ because they were born in a complicated digital world based on technology. Teachers are using digital technology as an essential tool to help in guiding lessons and student’s communication. In fact, computers have been in the education frame globally for a long period of time. Students are associating with others more globally and learning more things in varied ways than at any time in the past. New types of technology are going to be introduced continually. Most of these technologies are considered to make our life easier.

How are "effects on advertising" a substantial subtopic of "technology and society"? Also that section (except of the first sentence) discusses all kinds of things except effects on advertising. So I just removed it. Maybe parts of it can be used in other or new sections. The archived version of the section can be found above.

"Modern examples and effects"

The negatives effects of technology are presented in an unsophisticated manner and the sources are unimpressive.

The Youngstown State University Newspaper source focuses on anecdotes of students: "Darryl Alexander, junior, said Generation Y is a “standstill generation,” while freshman Carolyn Baer agreed, adding that she is not sure that this generation will actually accomplish much in its members’ lifetimes. There is a lot of laziness in the current generation, Baer said, adding that she also sees it in herself."

Another source is a DailyMail article about a poll of parents done by a software company called Bullguard: "The study also revealed that 40 per cent of parents find it annoying that celebrities and friends have more influence over their children than they do."

User:Jamzze: Following up on my removal of the "see also" tags from the top of the article, and my edit summary explaining it, I checked the documentation for the {{See also}} template. It says right there: "This template is used to create hatnotes to point to a small number of other related titles at the top of article sections (excluding the lead)" (emphasis mine).
