John Pickering

[edit]

The Encyclopedia Americana (wikisource edition) merely says she "translated into German Pickering's work on the Indian tongues".
The correct source is Pickering (1830-1831) "Indian languages of North America," printed in Encyclopedia Americana vol. 6 (1830) 6:569-75; (1831) 6:581-600
Talvj's foreword refers to the "Encyklopaedia Americana".
Pickering (1818) "On the Adoption of a Uniform Orthography for the Indian Languages of North America", pp.319-360] in: Memoirs of the American Acadmey of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 4 is a different work, and not Talvj's source, as some previous editor had guessed. So mention of that work will be deleted.--Kiyoweap (talk) 04:24, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Frauenzimmer

[edit]

The pseudonym may not have been as "self-deprecating" as the article states. While Frauenzimmer developed supercilious and even comically-mocking connotations in the course of the 19th century, it could be used fairly neutrally pre-1830, to designate a female individual, and roughly equivalent to the English “a female” (as opposed to “a woman” - eine Frau).
