Sony?

Was Vizio really part of Sony?

Rumors around various forums have been that Vizio is a subsidiary of Sony, but I've found nothing to confirm that. --LaraLove 19:07, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

I don't really think so. All Sonys and Samsungs use S-LCD Panels which is a joint venture between Sony and Samsung. See S-LCD. I've seen several carrying LG Philips and AUO panels (along with S-LCDs) when I opened up the back of them to repair.

Hello, I'm reaching out on behalf of the Corporate Marketing department at VIZIO about a couple inaccuracies we identified on the page. I went in and corrected the incorrect or outdated information but wanted to send a quick note about what we changed and validate why we did. All changes are fact based and are not promotional in any way.

1. Can we please submit our updated logo? 2. Our current tagline is "Beautifully Simple." so I have updated that as it is current. 3. In our description: we are a privately held consumer electronics company, so I have eliminated "producer of". 4. In the History section: The company did not start out as GreenDane. We do not know who/what GreenDane is. We did start out as "V Inc." so I have revised as such. 5. In the History section: The company does not have an office in Magna, Utah, nor did we ever. The articles listed here do not reference Magna, Utah either so I have eliminated Magna Utah from the section. 6. The last section that says "VIZIO's major partner in the consumer electronics arena is AmTran Technology, a Taiwan-based OEM/ODM that manufacturers more than half of the televisions sold by VIZIO and owns a 23% stake int he company", is outdated and inaccurate. I eliminated this sentence. 7. In the Television Sets section: We did not unveil an R Series in 2012, so I have eliminated that. 8. In the Television Sets section: We have not produced "LCD computer monitors", so I eliminated the word "computer."

All Caps on VIZIO?

It appears to me that VIZIO prefers to have its name in all caps. For those of you who know, is that true? Is it a change and if so it is permanent? And if so, should we change all the instances in this article to match?--Mrcolj (talk) 20:59, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Controversy versus Television_sets

I would like to request an edit on behalf of the corporate PR team at VIZIO. One comment on the page could be considered opinionated and is redundant with an earlier section. The earlier section is mostly correct and only needs a mild tweak. I have provided objective references for each comment, below.

In section 3 “Controversy” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vizio#History< ) there is a comment that references op-ed news articles about VIZIO’s collection of viewing habits: "In November 2015 it was revealed that Vizio was collecting information on its customers and selling it to advertisers.[28] To settle the case, in which Vizio were accused of using 11 million televisions to spy on customers, the company agreed to pay out $2.2 million.[29][30][31]”

Per the FTC notice on the topic, Vizio is not accused of spying. This is an opinion of the journalists who wrote the op-ed articles. VIZIO is accused of collecting anonymous viewer history. At the very least, this section is redundant with section 2.1.

In Section 2.1: Televisions, paragraph 3 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vizio#Television_sets) there is a more accurate version of the issue: "Vizio 'Smart TV' sets track viewers' habits and share them with advertisers, a practice that cable TV companies are prohibited from doing but that Vizio says is legal for TV manufacturers.[16] On February 6 of 2017, the Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement[17] with Vizio to pay $2.2 million to settle charges by the FTC and the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General that it installed software on its TVs to collect viewing data on 11 million consumer TVs without consumers’ knowledge or consent. The settlement required Vizio to delete the data it had captured and change its data collection practices."

This section would be more correct if it the word “can” were added, as follows. "Vizio "Smart TV" sets can track viewers' habits and share them with advertisers, a practice that cable TV companies are prohibited from doing but that Vizio says is legal for TV manufacturers.[16] On February 6 of 2017, the Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement[17] with Vizio to pay $2.2 million to settle charges by the FTC and the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General that it installed software on its TVs to collect viewing data on 11 million consumer TVs without consumers’ knowledge or consent. - This addition ("can" above) reflects the fact that the process is voluntary and can be disabled through the “Smart Interactivity” setting in the user settings menu.

Please replace the last sentence of the History section with the following 3 sentences: "As of 2021, Vizio had 527 employees across the U.S. in states including California, South Dakota, Washington, Arkansas, Minnesota, Texas, and New York. In 2021, VIZIO filed their S1 with the intent to go public. The company reported revenue of $2.04B."

My only real interest (besides being an owner of multiple Vizio TVs & a Vizio soundbar) was I requested the move from "Vizio Inc." back to "Vizio" (over a redirect from a previous move) because IMO the claim that "Inc." was needed for disambiguation from Microsoft Visio was too weak to qualify for an exception to WP:NCCORP. I have no personal objections to the proposed edit, though the "privacy" claim for Laynie Newsome & Ken Lowe is IMO questionable if publicly available sources name them as co-founders with William Wang, and I see no reference for the claim about Arkansas (I live here but never knew Vizio had any employees here; I just did a Vizio warranty exchange but it shipped from Southern California and was multiple tiers of subcontractors removed from Vizio itself). However, I would prefer to wait for others before pushing this proposed edit out. --RBBrittain (talk) 16:06, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

I should add that Vizio's SEC IPO filing (linked from the Variety article in the proposed edit) indicates the post-IPO parent company will be called "VIZIO Holding Corp." (a Delaware corporation like most publicly traded U.S. corporations) with the current "VIZIO, Inc." remaining as its operating subsidiary, which further justifies the removal of "Inc." that I requested as Wikipedia usually favors parent companies over subsidiaries. ("Vizio" in mixed case as opposed to "VIZIO" in all caps is preferable per WP:COMMONNAME as very few non-Vizio sources use all caps; notice our insider also just typed it that way.) --RBBrittain (talk) 16:44, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks RBBrittain for taking the time to look at my edit requests. It is also nice to hear that you have some Vizio products. I would like to address some of your concerns regarding my requests.

• It is true that Laynie Newsome & Ken Lowe are already mentioned in some sources as co-founders, but since they are non-notable people, and since the sentence reads better without their names included, it seems like removing their names should not be a problem.
• Vizio does indeed have a workplace in Bentonville, Arkansas, and this fact can be found on the company website here: https://www.vizio.com/en/careers as mentioned above. For this type of information there is no problem using the company's own website as seen here: WP:ABOUTSELF.

I'm not quite ready to proceed (I have other priorities in my life & I'm not that skilled an editor), and I still have my doubts about the Newsome-Lowe request as they are mentioned in some sources; the notability standard only means they don't get their own Wikipedia pages like William Wang's. I should have guessed that since Vizio is a Walmart vendor you have an office in Bentonville; the area has become so thick with vendor offices for the world's largest retailer that for a time it was nicknamed "Vendorville", but of course that office has nothing to do with warranty matters which the HQ in California is better equipped to oversee (especially since I bought my latest Vizio products at another retailer, including the new TV I had to exchange). --RBBrittain (talk) 17:19, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi, this is Jeremy. I have a few additional edit requests which will update the article, specifically in the History, Sound bars sections and the creation of a new SmartCast section:

1. In the History section please add the following updates:
   • In the sixth paragraph, right after the last sentence "Cognitive Media Networks was subsequently renamed Inscape Data." Please add the following few sentences: "Inscape is Vizio's data subsidiary. Previously known as Cognitive Networks, it was founded by Zeev Neumeier, an early pioneer of the automated content recognition (ACR) industry, who serves as Vizio's chief innovation officer. Inscape functioned as an independent entity until the end of 2020, when it was combined with Vizio Ads and SmartCast; the three divisions combining to operate as a single unit.
   • Before the sentence "In March 2021, Vizio filed for and IPO," please add the following two sentences: As of 2020 Vizio was the second largest company in the US for sales of flat-screen televisions. The company reported total revenue of $2.04 billion and net income of $102.5 million by the end of 2020.
   • Please change the following sentence, to this: In March 2021, Vizio officially went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VZIO.
   • Finally, in at the very end of the History section, add the following sentence: As of March 1, 2021, the company has sold over 11 million sound bars and 80 million TVs, and had more than 12 million active SmartCast accounts.

3. Please add the following new section right after the above bulleted list:
   • The new section should be a third-tier section named "SmartCast"
   • Please add the following paragraph: SmartCast is the operating system/platform that Vizio uses in all their smart TVs. It uses both Chromecast and Apple AirPlay. In June 2021 Vizio updated SmartCast with a Vizio voice feature as an alternative to Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant. The platform allows access to streaming apps like Apple TV, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix and Prime Video.
