Requested move 1 February 2024[edit]

Willy McIntosh → Willie McIntosh (actor) – Previously boldly moved but requested to be reverted by 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:A0CF:FBD7:6C6E:AB18. His name is correctly spelled Willie McIntosh, as evidenced by his personal profiles on Facebook and Instagram, as well as Content Thailand, a film/TV database maintained by the Ministry of Culture (which, unlike IMDb and other sites, is not user-submitted). Willie McIntosh is also how his name appears in the end credits to Dark World (the other film credits of his that I checked used his real name Ruengrit). The cited news articles simply spelled his name incorrectly (The Nation doubly so, as it also had "MacIntosh" instead of McIntosh). This Bangkok Post article has the correct spelling Willie McIntosh. Also, per WP:SPNC, "For minor spelling variations... when a consistent and unambiguous self-published version exists, it is usually followed." So even if Willy was previously correct, the article should follow how he currently spells his own name, which is Willie. -- Paul_012 (talk) 02:48, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment I reverted the move because both sources used in the article transliterate it that way, and the only source that had the 'ie' transliteration was a wordpress blog. I would be interested in seeing which transliteration is preferred by WP:RS proportionally, as MOS:ROMANIZATION tells us to "adopt the spelling most commonly used in English-language reliable sources, including but not limited to those already cited in the article" indexes may also be used in that process. The bigger issue is that there is very little WP:SIGCOV in secondary WP:RS overall which makes everything difficult. Both "Willie/Willy" and "McIntosh" are English-language names, so romanisation concerns shouldn't apply here. The dearth of English-language sources available online is unfortunate, but for minor spelling questions it shouldn't be a problem, and there's a plethora of coverage in Thai,[1][2][3][4] so redirecting or deletion would be inappropriate. --Paul_012 (talk) 03:52, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Interviews are WP:PRIMARY and don't count for WP:N. We can still use them in the article so long as we are careful though. I expect that more secondary RS exist, so redirecting will probably come down to how in-depth it is. We will also need to be careful in assessing reliability as the online versions of some broadsheets like Kom-Chad-Lue and Thairath host some Daily Mail tier sensationalist nonsense. No rush though as we should allow plenty of time for more people to find this page through the maintenance categories, and I expect there is more good sourcing to be found. You do bring up an interesting question regarding romanization when applying to non-Latin words that were originally borrowed from English, I wonder if that has been discussed somewhere. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:896B:568A:3FF6:761A (talk) 05:39, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
