Cool subject

[edit]

Interesting. This article is in good shape, well written, interesting, good job people.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 17:20, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article has great text. What I think it needs is pictures. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of Zoya Phan. I did find one of the Russian hero she's named after. Here it is. I'll post it in case you wish to use it.
File:Memorial to Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya.JPG
Zoya Phan was named after Russian hero Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, depicted in this statue.
Hmmm... that could fit; I'll have to mess around a bit, since I'm not much good with images yet. I'll probably make a subpage in my userspace and do some experimentation to see where it'd fit best. Good idea; I'd have never thought of that. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 04:36, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you like just copy the whole chunk, including the double squiggly brackets, and try it in the article in different locations with preview. theres a tutorial on pictures somewhere in Wikipedia but I forgot where it is.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 10:04, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Added on; it happened that the image as posted here was aligned exactly how I was thinking, otherwise it might have taken me hours. I shrank it down, but it still looks good. Thanks for the idea!! The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 19:44, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice article, but...

[edit]

I see the subject is referred to as 'Zoya' throughout. Since, as I understand it, Burmese names follow a similar format to western names (given name followed by family name), shouldn't we follow WP:SURNAME and refer to her as 'Phan'?

(Compare for example Aung San Suu Kyi, which refers to her as 'Suu Kyi' for short.) Robofish (talk) 17:23, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the problem with that; the Karen (like the Burmese) don't have family names in the same sense as Westerners. Phan is a given name just like Zoya, it happens that her father gave her and her siblings that name as well. If you look at the sources in the article, almost all of them refer to her as Zoya. They do that to avoid confusion with her father (Padoh Mahn Sha Lah Phan) and her sister (Bwa Bwa Phan), because they all share the name Phan; that way it's obvious which one of them is being referred to. In Aung San Suu Kyi's case, there's no such chance for confusion because her parents (Aung San and Khin Kyi) don't share the names Suu Kyi (indeed, it would be a lot more confusing to refer to her as Aung San or just Kyi, for obvious reasons). The press refers to her as Suu Kyi because that's the least ambiguous shortening, and the article here follows that. It's not unlike the situation with Ichiro Suzuki, in a way. Hope that clarifies things. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 03:35, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation, I see my assumptions about Burmese names were incorrect. Anyway, good job with the article. Robofish (talk) 10:05, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
