[[Category:2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami|~casualties dead]]
</noinclude>

which will print:

more than 637[1]

This has the advantage that the reference is transcluded, therefore you do not need to update the articles that also transclude this number, as they will automatically transclude the correct reference. There will be no unreferenced number floating around, or incorrectly referenced numbers, since the reference itself is also transcluded.

 Done I had to make one change, there needs to be no newline before the noinclude. PS: Well done, btw, this was a good change. --joe deckertalk to me 07:59, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Official source for casualty count?

[edit]

From Talk:2011_Sendai_earthquake_and_tsunami#Understating_deaths.3F, we have a link to [1] which is apparently the official tally from the Japanese National Police Agency. Now, I can't read the column names that well even after running through Google Translate, but I THINK the first column is deaths. The rows are prefectures, those translate fine. This seems like a good source for updating the official casualty count, just need confirmation of what's what on the PDF. (E.g., if we just have a list of relevant column #s here and what they are, any non-Japanese speaking editor can then update the numbers from the PDF.) –flodded(gripe) 10:57, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the first column is the number of deaths, the second column is the number of missing. (Confirmed this against a CNN article that has the same numbers as the current PDF, and the translation was close enough to make out that the first column is deaths as well.) –flodded(gripe) 12:29, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Death counts from other sources

[edit]

Some users have added reports on deaths from non-official sources like news agencies. Is there consensus to do this? I think that we should stick to the official statistics, because other news reports are often just approximations and may lead us to double count deaths that are already in the official statistics. There is no need to rush this - if the news agencies are accurate, the official statistics will be updated soon anyway.--Danaman5 (talk) 03:36, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
