The Amazing Race 19 is the nineteenth installment of the reality television show The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 19 features several teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world.[1] CBS confirmed that at least one Race cycle, including this 19th one, will air along with Undercover Boss on Sunday nights in the 2011-2012 television season.[2] The 19th season premiered on September 25, 2011.[3]

Production

Development and filming

Hacienda Heights's Hsi Lai Temple was the site of the starting line for this season of the Race, where teams participated in a task searching through several oil-paper umbrellas.

This season of the Race traveled 40,000 miles (64,000 km) across 20 cities and four continents.[4] Filming started on June 18, 2011, with teams seen leaving Los Angeles International Airport and heading to Taiwan.[5] As with the previous season, the starting line, which was located at the Hsi Lai Temple in the foothills of Hacienda Heights, California, had a unique task that the Racers had to perform before receiving tickets to their first destination.[4] American film crews were also spotted in Hillerød, Denmark, and were suspected to be for The Amazing Race; marking the first time the Race has visited Denmark.[6] Along with Denmark, this season will mark other first time visits to Malawi, Belgium, and Indonesia.[7] A visit to Thailand has also been confirmed for the season.[4]

Two new game elements were introduced in this season. Leg 1 introduced the "Hazard," a penalty one team will incur for being the last team to finish the starting-line task. According to Keoghan, the Hazard was added to "test people's mental strength out of the gate", and claims that it has a "rolling effect" throughout the rest of the Race.[8] Leg 2 will be the first in which two teams will be eliminated at the Pit Stop (in Season 10, two teams were eliminated during the first leg, but not both at the Pit Stop).[7]

During the first leg, racer Kaylani lost her passport at a gas station while en route from Hsi Lai Temple to Los Angeles International Airport. She and teammate Lisa returned to the station to search for the passport but could not find it, and opted to proceed to the airport in the hope that another racer had picked it up. The camera crew accompanying the team had seen the dropped passport, but could not tell Kaylani or Lisa or otherwise act on it; they instead informed the producers of the situation. The producers prepared to conduct an impromptu elimination and host Phil Keoghan rushed to the airport. The passport was found by two bystanders who had previously helped another team at the gas station; after posting about the incident on Twitter, a fan of the show advised them to take the passport to the airport, and they were able to return it to Kaylani before their scheduled flight.[9]

Casting

Applications for the 19th season were due on January 4, 2011. Semi-finalist interviews were held sometime in March 2011 and the final casting interviews took place in Los Angeles around March 2011.

The cast includes former Survivor winners and dating couple Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca; Zac Sunderland, the first person under 18 to sail solo around the world, and his father Laurence;[5] retired NFL player Marcus Pollard with his wife Amani; and former Olympic snowboarders Andy Finch and Tommy Czeschin.[7]

Leg 1 (United States → Taiwan)

In Taipei, teams raced dragon boats on the Keelung River in Dajia Riverside Park to receive their next clue.

In the Roadblock, one team member had to find a payphone, then dial 1-800-CONFUCIUS. The phone would then play one of Confucius's proverbs ("In all things success depends on previous preparation, and without such previous preparation there is sure to be failure."). Without taking notes, he or she would then have to repeat the proverb verbatim to a temple monk. Once they got the proverb right, they would receive their next clue. The Hazard task required Kaylani and Lisa to travel to the Core Pacific City Mall, where one of them had to perform an indoor bungee jump before they could receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At the Starting Line, teams had to search through several hundred oil-paper umbrellas for one that had the correct set of letters printed on it ("TAI") that when combined twice with their clue of six other letters ("WANPEI") would reveal the name of their first destination: Taipei, Taiwan. Once they presented Phil with the correct umbrella, he gave them keys to one of 11 Ford Explorers parked outside the temple. The last team to complete the task was penalized with the Hazard.
    • The first eight teams to arrive at the airport were booked on an earlier flight from Los Angeles to Taipei; the remaining three teams were booked on a second flight on another airline that departed 20 minutes later.
  • At the Ximending Commercial District, teams were told to "look up" for their next clue, and were left to figure out that their clue was displayed on an electronic billboard in Chinese: 台北孔廟 (Taipei Confucius Temple).
  • At the Dajia Riverside Park, teams joined a dragon boat team. One team member kept pace by beating a drum, while the other team member joined the paddling crew. Once they made it through the course, they would receive their next clue.

Leg 2 (Taiwan → Indonesia)

The Pit Stop for this Leg was the Sultan of Yogyakarta's palace: the Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to descend down into Goa Jomblang where they had to search for a traditional Javanese mask and a traditional dagger known as a kris, before returning to the surface to exchange them for their next clue. For the Speed Bump, Bill and Cathi had to untangle a rope until they had enough length to reach a karabiner across a field. The Detour was a choice between Shake Your Money Maker or Be a Ticket Taker. In Shake Your Money Maker, teams had to dress up in costumes with one team member dancing in the streets while the other played a gamelan in order earn Rp 30,000 (US$3.40). In Be a Ticket Taker, teams had to go to the Mal Malioboro Template:Id icon and convince enough motorbike riders to let them park their bike to earn Rp 15,000 (US$1.70).

Additional tasks
  • After completing the Detour, teams traveled to the 'Aisyiyah Orphanage Template:Id icon to donate the money they earned in exchange for their next clue. A small sign at the orphanage directed teams to donate all of the money in their possession. Teams that did not donate all of their money were not allowed to check in at the Pit Stop.
  • At the orphanage, teams received a coat of arms from the children and left them to figure out that it belonged to the Sultan and that the Pit Stop was at his palace: the Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat.
