The Ring magazine was established in 1922. Since 1928, it has named a Fighter of the Year. The award, selected by the magazine editors, is based on performance in the ring.

Muhammad Ali, who was named 'fighter of the year' more times than any other fighter. Was not awarded the honor in 1966 due to draft controversy. Ali won the award five times in total.

Eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao was named "fighter of the year" in the 2000s for three times.
