Overview

[edit]

Justin Lincoln is an experimental artist and art educator from Richmond, VA who has a desire for interpersonal connection. His work is mainly based around computer programming and experimental film. He has roots within multi-disciplinary art, pulling his inspiration from artists such as John Cage and Allan Kaprow, as well as avant-garde writers like Kathy Acker and William S. Burroughs. [1] He often incorporates the ideas of such artists into his teachings at Whitman College in the Northwest, in Walla Walla, WA. Lincoln has a large presence online on social media such as Tumblr (notational.tumblr.com), Twitter (twitter.com/justin_lincoln), and Vimeo (vimeo.com/justinlincoln). He believes that the world is quite atomized, despite the abundant amount of information that is available to people through things such as the internet and news. Many of his works have been displayed in galleries and art shows around the world, such as Brazil, South Korea, and Australia. Over the years, Lincoln has done collaborations with various artists with works and in galleries. Some of these artists he has collaborated with are Zoe Belhoff and Louisa stein.

Lincoln has memberships in the College Art Association (2006 - present) and Media Caucus (2010 - present). Previously, he has had a membership with the 1708 Gallery Board from 2007 to 2009 [2].

He currently lives and teaches in Walla Walla, WA.

Education & Teaching

[edit]

Lincoln has received three degrees from various higher education institutions. He received his Bachelor of Art (BA) in American Literature in 1995 from Longwood College at Farmville, VA. In 2000, he graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University at Richmond, VA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Sculpture. Finally, in 2002, he graduated from The California Institute of the Arts (also known as CalArts) at Valencia, CA with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Fine Arts. [3]

Between the years 2006 to 2010, Lincoln was an Adjunct Instructor for Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond. Currently, he is an Art Department Chair and, as of 2010, an Associate Professor of Art at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA [4], teaching Digital Art and New Genres. Previously, he has worked at the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. at which he taught multiple different medias such as sculpture, digital photography, and digital video.

His method for teaching in his classes is to coordinate and catalyze a research and experimental community, looking to encourage students and non-students alike to think in artistic and scholarly ways for themselves, instead of following in the footsteps of other artists and scholars. His belief in going to college, getting a higher education, is not to transfer information from one person to another, but is an opportunity for students to not only share thoughts, but to also share their dreams, perspectives, and bodily presence. He encourages his art students to keep a log of any ideas or references. Lincoln also believes if a student or person does not put heart into their work, that they should find a field that they do. He holds an interconnected mindset to a high standard and believes being active within criticism and production is important. [5]

Artistic Direction

[edit]

Justin Lincoln is an artist who works in multidisciplinary and experimental art, working with multiple digital mediums like experimental video, writing code into images, and doing digital drawing [6]. Much of his work includes the medium of blogmixing, which is internet montage that revolves around rhythms, patterns, and visual experimentation, as well as incorporating forms of social media. A few of his blogmixing work includes pieces such as Statement, Data Delays, and Peripherals 01262014 (In the Eye) [7], treating images within pop culture directly as just pure data. His piece Data Delays is a video done in 2014 which "blogmixes" the archive of his likes on Tumblr, accompanied with a soundtrack he creates with a LittleBits Synth kit. Peripherals 01262014 (In the Eye) was also a video blogmixing piece created in 2014, and it uses a processing program to sample the immediate center pixel of an image and display that color on the majority of the video frame. A newer form of art that Lincoln has recently begun to work and experiment in is what he has called "processing"; an art form in which he "borrows" pieces of the artwork of another artist and essentially modify and changes said work until he deems it broken, then continues to "fix" these problems himself.

Lincoln is interested in how people deal with the amount of information available due to the online networks that are available today; that it is now easily available and people do not need to use as much energy tracking information down. He believes that artists and intellectuals can learn how to balance and put together the information that is available to combine and create new and meaningful works and ideas; consumption of media will come out of a person's mind will come out in one way or another. Much of Lincoln's inspiration stems from the ideas and philosophies of artists like Allan Kaprow and John Cage, stressing the importance of the connections within his life, work, and teachings [8]. Much of his still image works are collages of words, works of other artists, as well as sometimes computer code [9]. Lincoln himself states how he often finds it difficult to be able to think within his own thoughts, but also believes that it is a worth wile struggle to have as it is a "struggle against standardization". He believes that, especially within the world of art, it is important to think for yourself and not allow other people to think for you.
