The 2024 Mid-Season Invitational was the ninth Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), a Riot Games-organised tournament for League of Legends, a multiplayer online battle arena video game. The tournament was hosted in Chengdu, China, from May 1 to 19, 2024. All stages of the tournament were played at the Chengdu Financial City Performing Arts Center [zh].

JD Gaming from China were the defending champions, but failed to qualify for the event after losing to Top Esports in the lower bracket final of the 2024 LPL Spring Playoffs.[2]

The event was won by Gen.G of South Korea after defeating the previous years' finalist, Bilibili Gaming of China, in the final with a score of 3–1.[3] Gen.G became the second Korean team (after T1) to win an MSI title, and their win marked the first time a non-LPL (Chinese) team has won the event after three consecutive years of prior Chinese winners.[a][5][6]

Format

Eight of the twelve teams started in the play-in stage, with the second seeds from the League of Legends Pro League (LPL), League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK), League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC), and League Championship Series (LCS) facing the top seeds from Liga Latinoamérica (LLA), Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLOL), Vietnam Championship Series (VCS), and Pacific Championship Series (PCS). The play-in stage is split into two double-elimination brackets, where each match is in a best-of-three format. The top four teams from the play-in stage advance to the bracket stage, where they will face off against the top seeds from the LCS, LEC, LCK, and LPL. This stage will consist of four matches, each being a best-of-five series, forming a double-elimination bracket.[7]

For the first time, the winner of the MSI will automatically qualify for the 2024 World Championship, provided that they qualify for the playoffs during the 2024 Summer Split in their respective domestic league.[8]

Qualified teams

A total of twelve teams have qualified for the event. The LPL, LCK, LEC and LCS have two teams each represented in event, with one team from each league qualifying directly to the bracket stage. The remaining four teams have qualified for the play-in stage, along with one team each from the PCS, VCS, LLA, and CBLOL.[2][9]

Chengdu was the city chosen to host the competition, marking the second time that China will host the tournament, having held the event in 2016. All stages of the tournament will be held at the Chengdu Financial City Performing Arts Center [zh].[10]

Play-in stage

  • Date and time: 1–5 May, began at 16:00 CST (08:00 UTC)[11]
  • Eight teams would be drawn into two groups.
  • Pool 1 team would play with pool 4 team, while pool 2 team would play with pool 3 team in upper bracket round 1.
  • Double elimination; all matches are best-of-three.
  • The four teams consisting of the winners and runners-up of each group advance to the Bracket Stage as pool 3 and pool 4. Remaining four teams are eliminated.

T1 vs FlyQuest

  • Game 1 Bans:

An easy victory for T1 with over a 10 kill difference in both games, nothing unexpected happened.

FNC vs TES

A much more interesting game, being only a 4 kill difference in the first game from TES, then a 17 kill difference from FNC, then finally a 8 kill difference in the last game allowing for TES to win. Their mid and bot lane overwhelmed FNC in the end with proper jg help.

PSG sweep with 7 kills and 12k gold up, and 23 kills and 15k gold up, not much to say here, PSG was just better.

A very hyped up game, with the most popular team in the world vs the most popular team in Europe, also being a 5 game series was a very good series. A very back and forth series, where T1 won the first round connivingly, then G2 won the next two dominantly, then T1 won the 4th game with a stomp, and on the last fight, T1 won with an important K'sante pick, which helped win the last team fight resulting in their victory.

BLG vs PSG:

Surprisingly a very close matchup, as BLG is considered Chinas best team by some. Resulting in a very interesting 5 game series, however, the last match was a complete stomp by BLG, with a 17 kill difference.

In a close 5 game series, GenG once again pulls off a win, and more importantly, keeps the dream of Chovy winning, and Chovy didn't disappoint, with a clear mid lead helping to dominate team fights leading to their victory.

Another important match, where T1 loses to BLG, mainly because BLG decided to attack T1 by banning Faker's champions, it got to a point where they used all bans against Faker's champions just to stop him, as he is the heart of T1, and it worked, without their midlaner on a control mage, T1 couldn't shine as well and lost the series.

G2 vs T1

Surprisingly, the rematch people have been waiting for, T1 vs G2, the last time was a close 2 v 3, but this time, T1 was in much better form than last time, and managed to cleanly win most of the rounds. This is the only match in bracket round 3.

A matchup many have awaited for, the best team in Korea, vs the first or second best team in China. The first win went to BLG, but then GenG turned it around with 3 straight dominant wins, and in the 4th game, the closest one, GenG managed to win with their better teamfighting surrounding their adc and mid laner.

In another rematch, between T1 and BLG, this was a very intense series, being the semifinals, with the winner facing GenG, While BLG didn't target ban Faker, they did keep banning Orianna and Azir, his two best champions, and in the final game, BLG just looked better everywhere, leading to a crushing loss to T1.

The finals match, in which GenG won the first two, and the last match to win it all. In the final match, BLG support and top didn't play so well, which led to their loss.

The finals MVP was awarded to GenG Lehends, which was his first international MVP. [13]

Co-Stream:

This event contained as many as 50 co-streams and more, as well as the official stream. This event saw an impressive amount of viewers, even more than last year. Producing nearly 100k viewers+ on an average game involving famous teams. The finals between GenG vs BLG reached around 2.6 million concurrent peak viewership live.[14] Not only that, but compared to last year, the viewership went up nearly 56%. [15]

Theme:

Every MSI, there is a new theme, for example, in 2023, the theme was, "Rules (Are Meant to Break),"[16] This year, it was, "Become the Unknown." For the merchandise for this event, RIOT partnered with the brand Li Nang, featuring a range of accessories taking inspiration from the MSI brand and League champions like Lee Sin as well as creatures like the Elder Dragon.[17]
