The second fixture between Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers in the 2011–12 Premier League season was played on 13 May 2012 at the City of Manchester Stadium. It was the 48th meeting of the two teams and both clubs' final league game of the season, with Manchester City starting the game with the chance to win a league title for the first time since 1968 dependent on their result, while QPR were still under serious threat of relegation.[1] When City let an early lead slip to fall a goal behind in the second half the match - and consequently their chance at winning the league - appeared to have slipped from their grasp but two goals scored in injury time completed a momentous turn-around, with the league being decided by virtually the final kick of the season.[2] Adding yet more drama to the event were former City player Joey Barton's red card - following which he continued to attack City players as he made his way off the pitch[3] - and also the fact that City's only remaining opponent in the title race before the game were their bitter rivals, Manchester United, who had dominated the competition in the preceding years.[4]

Immediately on the conclusion of the game the final few minutes were acclaimed by press and public, with journalists describing it as "the most dramatic conclusion to a season in Premier League history"[4] and "the most stunning finish to a season since Liverpool v Arsenal in 1989".[5] A number of years later the match continues to be highly regarded, with numerous publications citing it as the greatest Premier League game in history.[6][7][8]
