History
[edit]Founded in 2020, the Suns are the first American Basketball Association franchise in Chula Vista history. The team is owned and coached by Eric Brown, a three-year ABA veteran. "“I started this team because I wanted to give these guys an opportunity to play and compete against other pro’s,” he later said.[1] In October 2020, the team held its first tryouts and claimed to have signed Greg Hardy.[2][3]
The Chula Vista Suns finished the 2021–22 season with a league-best 17–0 record and a Pacific South Division title.[4] The team was defeated by the Las Vegas Royals in the Pacific South Division championship game.
On October 14, 2022, the Suns announced the signings of former Junior Basketball Association player Keshaun Mack and Youtuber Ryan Carter, also known as HeziGod.[5] Carter reportedly scored 103 points in a 214–104 win over the Los Angeles Wolfpack. The Suns finished the regular season with a record of 16–3.[6] Chula Vista suffered a 103–99 defeat to the Burning River Buckets in the ABA semifinals.[7]
The team finished the 2023–24 ABA season with a 16–2 record, and was rated 6th out of 109 teams in the final ABA Power Rankings.[8]
