Catching up

Hi Allreet. How are things? I'm glad you liked Nova Scotia. I was there briefly about 15 years ago and very much liked it, too. Always hoped to go back some day but haven't had a chance yet. Yes, I'm back in Western Canada now. Yeah, as you say, I hope it's a good thing. I'm working hard to try to make it so. I was in Japan for about 12.5 years.

It was my intention to remove the material. I placed a brief explanation in the edit summary and directed editors to the Discussion page, where I posted a more detailed explanation. I would be happy to discuss this with you if you need any more information on why this material is at best marginally of relevance to the article in question. I'm aware it was your intention to remove the material. However, the removal of sourced content was completely incorrect. "Where I posted a more detailed explanation", there is nothing on the talk page, so I have no clue what you're talking about. My mistake regarding the Discussion page. I had written the explanation but apparently failed to save it. My original post was still intact on the edit page, and I just clicked Save a couple minutes ago. My apologies. However, contrary to your notice on my talk page, I had clearly explained the edit in my summary. The issue isn't WP:SONGCOVER but WP:NOT. I don't question that the cover is worthy of inclusion: it's duly cited and the artist herself is notable. However, there are more than 40 versions of "Don't Think Twice" by other similarly notable artists on the List of artists who have covered Bob Dylan songs, and only a few of these would deserve a paragraph. My opinion is that the full section you've added is excessive in length and more of relevance to Kesha (your primary area of interest) than to the article's subject, the original song. Given that the cover hasn't even been released yet, its own particular notability can only be considered an unknown. For now, I won't touch the material you've reinstated, except to fix a typo, but plan to seek input from other editors on whether this information should be retained. Allreet, how are you? I just wanted to apologize for not getting back to you the last two times you wrote on my Talk page. About "DTTIAR", I wasn't sure how far that editor was going to take the fight, and lately I haven't been in the frame of mind to take on anything potentially stressful. (Well, I'm not saying I definitely would never be up to join in a disagreement like that, I'm just saying that in Wikipedia, one has to choose one's battles.) Anyway, I'm glad that situation seems to have worked out. Also thanks for writing to me about the BoB FAC. I wanted to see how that was going to play out before making any big plans of attack—I guess that's why I didn't end up writing back to you about that either. By the way, sorry you didn't know the FAC was going on. I sent you a note way back when, but I guess you missed it. Anyway, looks like we're getting close to the end of it one way or the other. Blonde on Blonde

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I should add it in the first place. Aside from Robertson and Danko on "One of Us Must Know...", Robertson played on several songs ("Leopard-Skin..." and "Obviously 5 Believers). Given The Band's initial involvement with the project, I guess it's kind of up in the air whether it should be listed here. Maybe start a discussion on the Blonde on Blonde article? Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Last drive's superstar, Lfstevens, again stood out, topping the leader board in all three categories and copy-editing over 700 articles. Thanks to all who participated! Progress report: We were once again successful in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog—while removing 1166 articles from the queue, the second-most in our history. The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our third tranche of Guild coordinators will be expiring at the end of June. We will be accepting nominations for the fourth tranche of coordinators, who will also serve a six-month term. Nominations will open starting on June 5. Alabama round?

I put it back in because it seemed to me it was known by both names. The redirect suggests that, too. IMO, it's not uncommon for songs to be known by names not their actual titles, so I'd have no problem with a "circular" cross-ref at Train Songs, if I came across one, provided they both link to the right page. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

List of Train Songs

The template indicating that the article has a one-country perspective is not intended to be and should not be read as a criticism. It is, however, true, that the article does not mention other countries or appear to consider that other countries might have railroads or songs about their railroads. The template is intended not to criticise the current article but to guide future editors as to how they might consider improving it.
In that vein, whilst your comment that, "the role of railroads in developing the geographic, commercial and social landscapes on the two continents" [sic] of Canada and America has influenced the development of train songs in those two countries, seems undeniable at face value, the article would benefit from you having a source that says so. Similarly, your further claim that this was, "...something that did not occur in parts of the world that were well established" would need a source before you could include it in the article. You would also need to explain what you mean by "well established" when talking about, say, India, China, Pakistan, virtually any African or South American country you care to think of or even Russia. What exactly does, "well established" mean when talking about a country where the average income is less than $10 per day, where millions live in poverty and huge swathes of the population struggle to find clean water? And even if you were able to source a defintion of, "well established", you would still need a source that evidences the link between this numinous concept and the development or otherwise of railroad songs. Or is there some very good reason I cannot think of why the poor hobos in America write and sing songs about their trains whilst the poor of other countries do not?
I guess the point I am trying to make is that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not simply a place for storing interesting lists of things. The article is interesting, and all of Wikipedia is grateful to all those who have worked on it, but it needs some sourced, scholarly text about train songs, explaining from social, musical or cultural perspectives why it is either perceived to be or actually is a purely north American phenomenon. For example, in three minutes of searching I found a ballad called, "In Memory of the Tay Bridge Disaster" about a rail crash in Scotland in the 1880s, I found a CD with 23 songs about the Orient Express (that's a train that runs from Paris, France to Istanbul, Turkey), Silver Train by the Rolling Stones, I Often Dream of Trains by Robyn Hitchcock, Destination Anywhere by The Commitments, Going Underground by The Jam, and Tuesday's Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd. This would seem to indicate that your claim to geographic exclusivity might not be sustainable with a little bit more effort. Cottonshirtτ 14:24, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

I note that despite the fact that I quite specifically said my placement of the template was not a criticism, despite the fact that I said, more than once, that the article was useful, interesting and that Wikipedia was grateful to all those who have contributed to it, despite the numerous useful suggestions I made for its expansion, despite the additional material I provided for the list of train songs you nevertheless ask in your reply whether I am disputing the legitimacy of the article. This indicates to me that despite the fact that we both speak English there is some fundamental element of communication not present. I am therefore going to bow out at this point. I wasn't going to re-visit this topic but there is one further point that I think deserves to be made. I note that in your reply to me you include a link to the Wikipedia policy on assuming good faith. In the same message you ignore the fact that I said my comments were to be read as a guide to future editors on improving the article, you ignore the fact that I commended all those who had worked on the article, you ignore my comments that the article would need sources adding to it to support points you wanted to make, you ignore the fact that I made several suggestions for improving and expanding the article, you ignore that I provided names of songs to be added to the list, and instead you ask whether I am disputing the legitimacy of the article. In other words, you ignore all the evidence that is staring you in the face and try instead to make a point for which there is no evidence whatsoever. This is not the act of an editor who is acting in good faith. I suggest that in future you take steps to ensure that you are acting in accordance with the relevant policies before reminding other editors of them, and then try Googling pot, kettles, and black. Mama, You Been on My Mind

Hi Allreet! How are you? Long time no see! I saw your "Mama, You Been on My Mind" article, and I also did a bit of polishing of it just now. Are you interested in nominating it for GA? I think with just a bit more polishing it could be ready. Were you planning to add anything else to it? Although it's not super long, it's a nice, pretty well-rounded article, so I don't think too much more would need to be added, although of course if you had other stuff you were planning to add, that could be good, too. I could add a sound clip for one thing. (But these days they're strict about asking you to specify what exactly in the article is being illustrated with the sound clip, so that might require thought.) One idea to expand it just a bit would be to add a Reception section and possibly move the Sounes and Trager quotes there. What do you think about all this? About "MYBOMM", I was looking on Google Books and there seem to be at least a few more references to use—I'm going to try to put together a Reception/Appraisal section, even if it ends up being short. Hi Allreet. I'm so sorry for my late reply! Mick gold and I ended up doing some more work on H61R for FAC and all my time got caught up in that. I've also been busy in real life and am not expecting to be able to do any serious editing of anything in the next couple of weeks. GOCE July 2013 news report

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.
