Do you want to block this IP. I looked back at its contribs, not one constructive edit. Also a whole bunch of warnings on the talk and a past block. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 13:48, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I'm now using LM's two new super-duper buttons at the bottom: delink and ensure correct formatting of dates, delink common terms, and delink ISO dates (although the last works only in the main prose, where ISO dates aren't supposed to be used anyway). You might find it useful. Tony (talk) 08:54, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

AWB access

I've removed your access to the tool due to your use of it to make excessive minor/inconsequential edits such as http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Carla_Boyd&diff=prev&oldid=246958367 . Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage#Guide outlines the agreement you abide by when using the tool. Making inconsequential edits such as delinking dates is (even though not given as an example) a violation of point 5 there, and perhaps, judging by the drama everywhere about this date issue, point 4 too.I hope I have been clear here, feel free to leave a message on my talk page if not. Martinp23 12:17, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Gee, who didn't see that coming? --Closedmouth (talk) 12:54, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the fast few edits of the hip and buttocks padding article.

reverting of user 85.133.23.2

I don't understand what this IP user did wrong for you to revert him (e.g. at Darren Moore). They were updating an external link to a player website, from a URL that didn't work to one that did. Seems fine to me. Please could you test the links before and after and consider undoing your reverts (or I will do it if you're happy for me to do so) . Re: Yikes

I wasn't sure what method he was using to spam talks, so my instant instinctual reaction was to post something quickly to make him stop. With a script, or even good old copy and paste, you'd be amazed through how many talks you can get in a few minutes. I did ease up there a little after his apology established he wasn't in fact a vandal, and I even fixed the broken coding on his talk page. You raise some good points, but in my opinion a good-faith newbie would (or should) take the effort to read the rules and comprehend them. As I see it a BITE-vio would in this instance consist of something like a short term block, not a (stern) warning. Even though, good on you for giving me the heads-up, I do appreciate the advice. +Hexagon1 (t) 02:54, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Pardon me for budging in, NurseryRhyme and Closedmouth but I'd just like to explaim to NurseryRhyme what has appeared to have happened. if some one vandalises a page, and you then edit itm the only way to get rid of the orgianal vandalism is to revert all edits up till the last good one before the vandalism. I still object to the edit summary. Little Red Riding Hoodtalk 18:13, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh, right, I see what you mean. Huggle does that automatically if you revert more than one person's edits. At no point did I label your edits as vandalism, your username is merely included in a revert. Happens all the time. --Closedmouth (talk) 03:33, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Looks like Huggle needs tweaking.  :( Little Red Riding Hoodtalk 18:03, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Well, to be strict about it, your edit was reverted as it had, unintentionally, left quite offensive vandalism on the page. I don't think anything in the summary assumes bad faith. DoubleBlue (Talk) 19:35, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Date edits in radio station articles

Please be careful when you're using AWB to remove date links, as you did recently on WMXB and WFTH. While bare date links are one thing, the year links in the 'First air date' field of the infobox were piped to 'YYYY in radio' articles that do provide context. Thanks, Mlaffs (talk) 13:56, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

I fail to see the difference. Perhaps if they weren't hidden behind a pipe it would make more sense. --Closedmouth (talk) 14:16, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
You really don't see the difference between a generic article, which links to a 'YYYY' article that doesn't provide any context or add any value to the original article, and an article about a radio station, which links to a 'YYYY in radio' article that provides context to what was happening in radio when that station came on the air? It seems pretty straightforward to me. Agreed it's unfortunate that the link is piped, but the field 'First air date' needs to be satisfied visually by a date, so the pipe is unavoidable and certainly common throughout article space. Mlaffs (talk) 15:58, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
I just don't get why, if the link is so important for context, it should be hidden as a generic link to a year "article". I think the solution would be to put the link into the prose, like: "The station first came on the air in 1961 (see 1961 in radio) as a classical music station". I think that works quite well, and it makes the link more prominent and relevant. --Closedmouth (talk) 02:47, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello, would you happen to know why do I get these errors after I have added the ref in that article? Thanks,--Adi4000 23:31, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

A small formalia question on A26 (submarine)

Hello,

I am slightly uncertain about a point in an edit I made earlier tonight on the page for the A26 (submarine) article, basically the case where I refer directly to one of the sources quoted in the article that constitutes one of the sources used. I am uncertain whether my profession in journalism is causing me to conflict with encyclopaedic practices - a journalist of course always quotes sources by name if they are a person or judicial entity, but in this case I am slightly worried that it makes the admittedly very brief wikipedia stub appear more like a news article than an encyclopaedic entry.

So for the case of clarifying the general practice a bit with a practical example towards my future edits I'd love to have an opinion. This is the diff for the article and edit in question: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=A26_(submarine)&diff=249316811&oldid=240794535

Also, I must thank you for the time you took way back to message me when I had just only started editing on Wikipedia, it did offer some very immediate aid in improving my editing practices with quite a few "oh woops" moments as I started looking through the material linked.

Cheers, DanielAgorander (talk) 03:48, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

I made one more edit with a few additions as well, complimentary diffs if you want quick access to them:

Before topic raised above to after this new edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=A26_(submarine)&diff=249332079&oldid=240794535 Between edits: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=A26_(submarine)&diff=249332079&oldid=249316811

Cheers, DanielAgorander (talk) 03:57, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for having a look at that, man, and I'll see about getting some pointers from Tony1 for the future. DanielAgorander (talk) 06:22, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Gordan Bombay's nickname in the final two installments of the Mighty Ducks's series was "Captain Blood." It is referenced frequently in the second film, most notably when Averman suggests that the team's final practice would result in "the return on Captain Blood".

Using AWB to make controversial edits

AWB may not be used to make controversial edits. See this. Clearly, the removal of existing date links is controversial with many editors; therefore, AWB may not be used for this purpose. See this post. Tennis expert (talk) 09:42, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

I never felt my edits were controversial (apart from just after Martin removed my access), and I still haven't been convinced of any arguments that consensus hasn't been reached, and therefore that my edits are "controversial". --Closedmouth (talk) 17:54, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Whether you believe your edits deserve the label of "controversial" is irrelevant. The relevant fact is that many people disagree with your edits. Therefore, your edits are ipso facto controversial, which means that AWB may not be used. I suggest that you re-read the post cited in my first message, above. If not typo Wahington/Washigton

Happy to oblige.

If not typo suggest modify to something like Washinton [sic].

Thus: {{sic|Washinton}}

Other 20-1 misspellings of Wahington/Washigton seemed to be genuine.

When correcting misspellings all care taken to avoid the following:

  • misspellings part of names of Image:Wahinton.jpg files.
  • misspellings in historical blockquotes.
  • misspellings that are other words, or words in other languages.
  • misspellings marked by sic or other comments.
  • misspellings are sometimes very difficult to tell, as one cannot know everything.
  • if you fail to correct a misspelling, you may never find it again, in which case change it and it will be logged in the edit summary.
  • sometimes a word is so badly misspelled it is unclear which word it is supposed to be, in which case add a comment <!-- what word is this --> and a sic.

Warning regarding unlinking of dates

As this practice (and the actual manual of style guideline) are currently in dispute, you should probably back off of unlinking dates until the dispute is resolved. Prior ArbCom cases have looked unfavorably on editors who attempt to force through disputed changes on a large scale as you (and other editors) are doing. Specifically, Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Episodes_and_characters_2/Proposed_decision#Fait_accompli, which I quote:

Editors who are collectively or individually making large numbers of similar edits, and are apprised that those edits are controversial or disputed, are expected to attempt to resolve the dispute through discussion. It is inappropriate to use repetition or volume in order to present opponents with a fait accompli or to exhaust their ability to contest the change. This applies to many editors making a few edits each, as well as a few editors making many edits.

Continuing this behavior could be considered disruption. Please stop and instead participate in the ongoing discussions at WT:MOSNUM and elsewhere. Tennis expert (talk) 07:20, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Slight problem

Thanks. Interesting. I reported two bugs myself in Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Bugs. I'll download the new AWB snapshot which is supposed to detect and warn about duplicated defaultsorts. These kind of problems enforce my opinion that Lifetime has to be removed completely. -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:14, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Exactly! I keep reporting different kind of problems caused by the use of Lifetime and hopefully I'll bring the subject under discussion again soon. As step 1, we have to get rid of BD. Especially, [3] shows that many editors may are using a template but don't really know how it works. -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:42, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism

Ok, I have been working on the So You Think You Can Dance Canada webpage and repeatedly a contestants name is being removed and switched to "Cheeseball." As well, pertinent information is being removed, results changed (to reflect this contestant being removed from the competition and others staying around longer than they did). Most of the time, I can't even undo the revisions because they don't appear to be happening. It is getting frustrating and there are two IP address users that are doing it. How do we deal with the vandalism? Tahutton (talk) 22:35, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Your edit of revolutions was entirely unconstructive and did not help me with my essay. I feel that you did not even consider the possibly of my article being more informative than the existing one. In fact I don't think you even looked at it. You seem to me the worst type of vandal unable to comprehend with new forms of community collaboration. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.28.151.178 (talk)

You have an odd definition of "community", i.e., you. --Closedmouth (talk) 06:30, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

"Enhanced..."

Please advise as to how my editing of this article resulted in its becoming more biased, rather than less. Herrschmetterling (talk) 13:22, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Seriously...? --Closedmouth (talk) 13:27, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

standards. seriously.

I AM THE EGG.

Wow, you're uptight. Do you know Unpopular Opinion? I'm a sockpuppet of him. You'd get along well. --Eggd3 (talk)

What a tiresome little idiosyncrasy that is. --Closedmouth (talk) 14:05, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

"Famous Comments on English Cuisine"

Why was "Famous Comments on English Cuisine" deleted in the English Cuisine article?

References were added and it was NOT(!) vandilism!!!

Are you English Closemouth? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.107.251.207 (talkcontribs)

What...I thought I reverted you deleting a huge chunk of text. Fuck, I'm too tired for this. --Closedmouth (talk) 14:31, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

I created the page. Now I'm deleting it. I don't have OK on the copyright, thought I did. I'll get it sorted out and put a page back up, but have to go to work now... and want to get these blanked, or better still, deleted... before I leave.

You reverted it, probably because it looked like I did it incorrectly (forgot to put the delete tag). Please revert the revert! thanks... DjbFire (talk) 14:51, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

You've issued a block warning to Cervo91 - who has meanwhile just vandalized a help page (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Help:Archiving_a_talk_page&oldid=255212455). I'm a relative newbie and don't know how to go about this now; I've reverted the edits though. Ta! Audionaut (talk) 16:39, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Image in use on you user page?

I thought I'd let you know that your user page is reported as using the image Image:Sam Masterbating.jpg. I have asked for assistance at Wikipedia:Editor_assistance/Requests#Suspected_template_vandalism_affecting_user_page. William Avery (talk) 12:50, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

question about adding ELs

I did some EL adding earlier today that was removed because it was apparently considered spam- I apologize for that, I wasn't aware of the guidelines.

But I've done a little reading and came across this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links#Non-English_language_content

"Links to English language content are strongly preferred in the English-language Wikipedia. It may be appropriate to have a link to a non-English-language site, such as when an official site is unavailable in English; or when the link is to the subject's text in its original language; or when the site contains visual aids such as maps, diagrams, or tables – per the guideline on non-English-language sites."

The site to which I was linking is a valuable resource for English speakers, filled with information translated into English that is in some cases unavailable from any other source. Everything on the site is officially approved by the respective artists' labels/offices/etc., as per their about section: http://musicjapanplus.jp/about/

"To bring you this information we receive our information directly from record industry sources in Japan who give us the official green light on carrying their information on musicJAPAN+. Therefore, our artist database may develop slower than other English reading Japanese music sites on the web, but you can trust that the artist information we publish is accurate and official."

Those things said, does that change the acceptability of the links I made today? I will certainly understand if not, I am just looking for a little clarification. Thank you!Cerreycow (talk) 13:25, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

When people add links en masse to a large amount of articles, that generally piques my spidey spam sense. If you feel justified in saying it's a relevant link, please, by all means remove my warnings and add the links wherever you want. --Closedmouth (talk) 14:43, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I would like to add that links to database sites are generally not acceptable, and the links the above user has added are just that. The warnings should stand as applied. --Jacob Talk 15:42, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, Closedmouth. I understand and appreciate why you judged them to be spam. If I add any more/again, I'll be sure to consider the spam standards you linked me to before doing so. Thanks again! Cerreycow (talk) 12:28, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Contested PROD on April 29, 1992?

You said that PROD tag is contested. Can you fill me in over on the talk page? Thanks. tedder (talk) 13:19, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Copying my reply over there for your convenience:

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. tedder (talk) 23:16, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Manahoac

One the Manahoac wiki page.....I had added the link to the Official Web page of the Manahoac Native American tribe's website. Also the Joseph "Nanmankoi" Newman page is for the guy who was a portege of Chief Turkey Tayac (who also has a Wikipedia page)....Joseph was the person who went out and spent many years bringing back North Carolina's Algonkian and siouan Native American descendants. Joseph Newman is also a distant cousin of Turkey Tayac. Native American tribes do not have the money to get fancy websites so most of their websites are hosted on geocities. Please look at the link that was added to the manahoac website. The link is fully part of the Manahoac. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SouthEasternTribes (talkcontribs) 08:24, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

2010 Senate elections

I removed stuff about Ted Kaufman since whoever placed him in the retiring senators section failed to mention that he announced plans to retire; the article only said that he's "expected" to not run again. Upon reading the Ted Kaufman article, I realized that it the Ted Kaufman section in the United States Senate elections, 2010 article was in the correct category but included incorrect information.

Perhaps you're new to Wikipedia, but it's common for editors to use one edit summary when they're making multiple edits on the same thing. And it's really, really annoying when somebody comes along and reverts them while they're making the edits. I sat there wondering, "Did the Wikimedia servers not receive my edit, as happens occasionally?" But no, it was a careless Wikipedian; he didn't even revert it all the way!

Next time, take time to look at the edit summaries, or at least ask the editor, before you accuse them of making a noobish edit (you wouldn't have bothered to put the deleting information without explanation template on my talk if you thought it was a reasonable edit), even if you do it with a flowery, pre-made template that claims to assume good faith. 216.27.182.48 (talk) 08:03, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Alrighty then, I had a well-reasoned, thoughtful, apologising response written out, but I edit-conflicted with that patronising nonsense, so the hell with it. I made a mistake, get over it. --Closedmouth (talk) 08:15, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Want to earn $500,- USD? Then make an painting (coloured) of Pier Gerlofs Donia based on given descriptions of the man - upload it and place it on the article. If you aren't artistic, please ask someone else to do this! 193.172.170.26 (talk) 09:24, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
